Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand head to 2027 Polls With Ram Temple Legacy, Economic Pressure, and Anti-Incumbency in Focus

New Delhi: Two major BJP-ruled states — Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, and Uttarakhand, a key spiritual destination — will vote in 2027. In both, Chief Ministers Yogi Adityanath and Pushkar Singh Dhami continue to enjoy the backing of the central BJP leadership, including the Prime Minister’s Office, the Home Minister, and the RSS. Within the party, both are frequently cited among its better-performing CMs and are being positioned to lead the campaign.

The BJP’s political identity since its formation in 1980 has been closely tied to three long-standing positions: a Uniform Civil Code, the construction of a Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. The Modi government says all three were delivered during its tenure, a record it uses to mobilize its core base. The Ayodhya temple project, from the formation of the Trust to the inauguration, was personally overseen by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has made the Ram Temple a central plank of the party’s cultural narrative. That messaging helped the BJP win a majority in 2014 and 2019, and expand into a majority of states.

As the 2027 cycle approaches, the party faces a more complex landscape. Critics and opposition parties have amplified several issues on social media and in political discourse. These include allegations of financial irregularities in temple donation collections at Ayodhya and Badrinath, including reports of missing gold and silver items that were widely circulated online and in some media reports. Temple Trusts and state authorities have not released consolidated public audits addressing every viral claim, and no court has delivered a final finding on these specific allegations as of now. The BJP has denied any institutional wrongdoing and says any individual misconduct will be dealt with under law.

Economic concerns are also dominating voter conversations. A rise in domestic and commercial gas, petrol and diesel prices, linked in part to global energy volatility, has fueled inflation concerns among middle-class and lower-income households. Separately, the nationwide rollout of ethanol-blended petrol has drawn complaints from two-wheeler and three-wheeler owners who claim reduced mileage and engine issues. The government maintains that ethanol blending is part of an energy security and emissions policy, and that fuel quality norms are being monitored, while the Attorney General has referenced ongoing technical assessments. The Petroleum Ministry has said ethanol-blended fuel meets Bureau of Indian Standards specifications, though public feedback remains mixed. With over 26 crore two-wheelers registered till 2025, this remains a high-visibility consumer issue.

In Uttarakhand specifically, the state BJP is contending with local controversies that opponents have used to attack its law-and-order and governance record. The 2022 Ankita Bhandari case, allegations involving some local party functionaries, and concerns about unemployment, liquor sales, and development pace have been raised by the Congress and other opposition groups as signs of anti-incumbency. The state government says it has acted on the Bhandari case through the judicial process and has launched employment and infrastructure drives.

The electoral math is therefore open. The BJP is banking on its Hindutva-cultural agenda, delivery claims, and central leadership appeal. The Congress, Samajwadi Party in UP, and other regional forces are seeking to consolidate voters around inflation, jobs, fuel policy, and governance questions.

With 2027 still some distance away, the outcome will likely turn on whether voters prioritize the BJP’s temple-and-nationalism narrative and leadership continuity, or whether economic strain and local controversies create enough swing to benefit the opposition.
