Theatre is a mirror of society: NSD chief Chittaranjan Tripathi

New Delhi
Theatre is a mirror of society and its times. This is why people are afraid of theatre and theatre artists. This was stated by Chittaranjan Tripathi, director of the National School of Drama, at a recent interaction held at the Indian Women’s Press Club.
Senior actress, dancer, and radio personality Jayshree Arora was also present at the event. The discussion focused on the possibilities of theatre in the digital age, especially OTT platforms, women’s participation, and challenges such as gender stereotypes. Chittaranjan Tripathi said that NSD provides intensive training to students from across the country not only in acting but also in every aspect of theatre – such as stage management, production, and presentation.
This is why artists from NSD have established strong presence in films, television, and now even on OTT platforms.
He explained that audiences for theater and drama performances have grown rapidly these days, opening up new opportunities for artists. In this vein, NSD has launched an app called “Natyam,” on which approximately 12,000 NSD plays have been uploaded so far. Through this app, people will be able to enjoy theater from the comfort of their homes.
Additionally, a radio platform called “Rangakash” has been launched, where radio plays and other information related to the genre will be shared. Tripathi stated that a growing number of young people are becoming attracted to theater, yet he urged people to visit the theater and support the performances by purchasing tickets. Furthermore, he added that acting workshops are also being conducted for seniors, allowing them to pursue their passion.
Jayshree Arora, who has been associated with theater, films, radio, and television for nearly four decades, also shared her experiences. Jayshree, who became a household name with her role as “Bhagwanti” in “Hum Log,” said that theater brings to life real events in society. Characters from plays and films often appear in our real lives. Describing acting as a form of worship and penance, she said that a true artist devotes their entire life to mastering this art.
When an actor portrays a character with sincerity, the audience is not only entertained but also inspired. This inspiration can spark change in society and alter people’s perspectives. Jayshree Arora said that OTT platforms have given a new identity to small-budget, non-commercial, yet meaningful cinema. Previously, such films were not available in theaters, but now they are able to reach audiences directly.
Speaking about the challenges women face, she said that even in this field, women face many difficulties. However, she believes that women possess the strength to overcome every challenge. In her words, “Women are the epitome of strength; they are never helpless.”
