A refinery in Rajasthan to be inaugurated by PM Modi in flames

A massive fire broke out in a refinery in Balotra district of Rajasthan jointly run by the HPCL and the government of Rajasthan. What is more worrisome about this massive fire to Pachpadra refinery is the fact that party from the huge losses the prime minister Narendra Modi was to inaugurate it tomorrow on 20 th April, 2026.

Though no casualties have been reported til writing of this news but looking at the massive smoke emanating out of the huge fire it looks that the damage and destruction to the refinary has been tremendous. According to the latest news the foundation stone of this refinary was laid during the rule of the then chief minister Ashok Gehlot by the than UPA Advisory council chairperson Sonia Gandhi on September, 22, 2013 with an jntiatial estimate expenditure to be incurred in it worth Rs. 37, 230 crores.

The project was relaunched when the Modi government assumed power at the centre and the state in 2018 raising its cost to Rs. 43192 crores. The refinery, India’s first greenfield integrated Refinery-cum-Petrochemical Complex at Pachpadra in Balotra, is a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the government of Rajasthan.

It is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s energy security by reducing dependence on imports and enhancing domestic production capabilities.

The New Delhi Television news reports that Beyond fuel production, the refinery is expected to generate significant quantities of downstream petrochemical products.

These will serve as high-quality raw materials for upcoming industrial units in the region. Industries based on products such as polypropylene, polyethylene(HDPE/LLDPE), benzene, toluene, and butadiene are likely to be made, paving the way for a robust industrial ecosystem said NDTSv further mentioning that
these materials will support the manufacturing of a wide range of goods, including plastic furniture, agricultural pipes, packaging films, automobile
components, synthetic fibers, medical equipment and chemicals like paints and detergents.

But this massive fire judg twenty four hours before the prime minister’s visit have given the HPCL and the group vernment if Rajasthan quite a big setback as it will take another several months and lit of money to Commence the refinary.

The former chief minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot while expressing his deepest concern over this fire said : I am deeply concerned to hear of the fire at the refinery in Pachpadra, Balotra. The refinery is a proud project for all of us Rajasthanis and is scheduled to be inaugurated tomorrow. This incident is extremely unfortunate at this time.
