Saket Police Station Becomes Flashpoint After Alleged Thrashing Of Two Muslim Girl Journalists For Questioning Delhi CM Rekha Gupta At Max Hospital Event; BBC Reporter, Congress Minority Dept Stage Midnight Dharna

The Saket police station has become the centre of a major controversy after two girl journalists were allegedly thrashed by women police personnel inside the police station on the alleged instructions of the SHO, after they questioned Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah during an inauguration-related function at Max Hospital, Saket.

According to the victims, who are reporters of digital channel 4PM and whose names have been given as Shaheen Khan and another colleague, they had asked the Delhi Chief Minister a question regarding deteriorating health services in Delhi government hospitals during the Max Hospital inauguration where Amit Shah was chief guest. Shortly after, they allege they were picked up and taken to Saket police station.

Inside the police station, the journalists allege they were beaten brutally by women police staff. According to them, after they revealed their caste as Khan, the atrocity increased and they were targeted because they are Muslims.

As the news spread, at midnight BBC correspondent Huda Zarriwala reached Saket police station along with a few persons and her cameraman and confronted the police personnel. She angrily asked for the SHO and castigated all those present, asking why the women journalists were beaten so brutally just for asking a question from the Delhi CM. She demanded that the DCP, ACP and SHO come to the police station immediately and answer her questions, saying “I am also a Muslim journalist, my name is Huda Zarriwala.”

Meanwhile the incident triggered a gathering outside Saket police station. Women journalists from various private channels and YouTubers started thronging at the station demanding action and release of the girls. At the same time, the Minority Department of the All India Congress Committee also reached the police station and staged a dharna.

The Congress Minority Department issued a statement in Hindi late night saying:

“As per the instructions of National Chairman of Congress Minority Department, MP Imran Pratapgarhi ji – Delhi Pradesh Congress Minority Department Chairman Wahid Qureshi ji, National In-charge of National Legal Cell Adv. Rais Farooqui ji and his team, in-charge of Delhi Minority Department Shri Shibli Manzur and Legal team of Delhi Minority, District Presidents and office bearers of Delhi Minority are present at Saket police station with Shaheen. What happened with Shaheen is intolerable. Congress Minority Department and entire Congress stands with Shaheen.”

According to the statement, senior leaders including Delhi Minority Chairman Wahid Qureshi, Legal Cell national in-charge Advocate Rais Farooqui, Delhi in-charge Shibli Manzur along with district presidents and legal team remained present at Saket thana throughout the night in support of the journalist identified as Shaheen.

Delhi Police has so far not issued an official statement on the alleged custodial beating inside Saket police station, while sources claimed the girls were only brought for inquiry for creating disturbance at a high security event attended by the Home Minister.

The matter is further escalating with journalists bodies demanding CCTV footage of Saket police station and immediate suspension of SHO.
