The Congress leader and leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi has welcomed the decision of BJP led NDA to formally agree on caste census saying that finally the government has succumbed to the emphatic demand raised by him and the Congress party. While welcoming the BJP led NDA government on this agreement of caste census Rahul Gandhi categorically said that this would not have been possible had we and the entire Congress party not raised this issue emphatically for which he also heartily thanked all the activists and leaders of Congress but also said that this is not enough unless the government permanently withdraws the cap over fifty percent reservation and accords reservation in private jobs at the pan India level. Rahul Gandhi was addressing a press conference at Congress headquarters in New Delhi on Wednesday evening after the BJP led NDA government declared its acceptability over the protracted Caste Census issue being raised by Congress party and its leaders Rahul Gandhi. Welcoming the decision Rahul Gandhi said the credit for this goes to his party as after a long relentless struggle the ruling party finally agreed. However he said that the Telengana model of Caste census should be made the basis of the future census as though there are two different models of caste census, one of Bihar and another of Telengana but the later one is more acceptable and feasible adding that the agreement on caste census would be a new paradigm shift on the path of development and upliftment of the poor and deserving population. He further said that the government should also ensure that these backward castes, Dalits, poor people also have adequate share in the power structure of the country. Until this objective is fulfilled we will not be able to achieve the real and actual objective of empowering them to the core and the caste census exercise would be of no relevance and significance.
After the press conference the LOP Rahul Gandhi wrote on X : It is clear that the pressure we put on the government for Caste Census has worked.
But we don’t intend to stop here: • We will ensure they conduct a comprehensive and consultative census – a people’s census, not a bureaucratic census • We will continue to press for the removal of the arbitrary 50% cap on reservations • We will make sure they implement a central law for SC/ST Sub-plan and guarantee budget allocations including Article 15(5) of the Constitution which promises reservation in private education is fully enacted This is the will of the people of India and the Modi government has no option but to follow it emphasised Rahul Gandhi in his press conference.
