Uttarkashi: Major Road Accident Near Gangnani – Innova Car Plunges Into Bhagirathi River, 4 Bodies Recovered, 3 Missing

A major road accident took place on the Gangotri National Highway on Thursday morning. Near Gangnani, about 20 metres ahead of Dharmakund towards Dabrani, an Innova car went out of control, rolled down a deep gorge and plunged directly into the Bhagirathi river.
Four bodies have been recovered* from the riverbank so far. *One person is seriously injured* and 2 to 3 persons are feared missing, for whom search is still underway.
Pilgrims From Gujarat Were Going To Gangotri Dham
According to preliminary information, a total of seven people were travelling in the Innova car. All the passengers are said to be residents of Sabarmati area of Gujarat and were travelling from Uttarkashi towards Gangotri Dham for darshan.
The ill-fated vehicle is an Innova car bearing registration number UK 08 TA 6040, registered in Haridwar.
According to the District Disaster Management Centre, the information about the car falling into the river near Gangnani was received through Delta at around 7:21 AM on Thursday.
Immediately after receiving the information, relief and rescue teams were activated on the instructions of District Magistrate Prashant Arya. Local police, SDRF, Maneri Police, 108 Emergency Service, Water Police and divers were rushed to the spot.
Rescue Operation Underway Amid Strong Current
Rescue teams, after strenuous efforts, recovered four bodies from the riverbank. One seriously injured youth was pulled out of the river and shifted to hospital, where his treatment is underway.
Disaster Management Officer Shardul Gusain said the strong current of the river is posing a major challenge to the rescue operation. Divers and Water Police are searching for the missing persons amid the fast-flowing river.
District Magistrate Prashant Arya is closely monitoring the entire incident.
Identification Underway, Cause Being Investigated
The official identification of the deceased and the injured has not been done yet. Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem. Investigation is underway to find out how the driver lost control and how the accident happened.
The exact number of dead and missing will be clear only after the completion of the rescue operation.
The Gangotri National Highway (NH-108) is a narrow, landslide-prone mountain road, where even a moment’s loss of control can prove fatal.
