Joint Parliamentary committee meeting on amendments on Waqf Board legislation to arrive at amicable solution postponed for next week due to heated exchanges among members
The Joint Parliamentary committee meeting convened to arrive at an amicable settlement on the issue of Waqf Board legislation resulted in vociferous discussions among its members representing adverse ideologies. The mber of the Trinamool Congress Kalyan Banerjee and the BJP member Nishikant Dubey had heated discussions resulting in the meeting being called off for some time. The Trinamool Congress leader and member Kalyan Banerjee had objections to convening of the JPC meeting in such a short notice questioning the reason behind this desperate hurry. To this the BJP senior member raised objections to this leading to heated exchanges of views finally the meeting being adjourned for sometime to pacify the raised sentiments. When the situation went out of control due to acrimonious scenes the ten members hailing from the opposition camp have been suspended from the committee for a day. Now the JPC meeting in the Waqf Board legislation has been postponed till 27 th January. According to the latest reports the the religious head of Kashmir Mirvaiz Farooq Umer will present himself before the parliamentary committee on the possible amendments in the Waqf Board legislation on Friday. He will register his objections on the legislation of the Waqf Board. The meeting of the joint parliamentary party on Waqf Board legislation under the chairmanship of BJP leader Jagdambika Pal with objections of the opposition members has been postponed for the next week reveal the news reports. The JPC will discuss in detail on the legislation on Monday now. On Friday the committee will also hear the views of the group of Lawyers for justice in addition to Mirvaiz Umer Farooq.
Meanwhile according to the latest news reports the United Democratic Front MP Francis George, who had announced to support the Wakf (Amendment) Bill 2024, earlier has now backtracked on his statement on Thursday saying that his statement was misinterpreted.
Earlier he had said that as a public representative and a representative of a political party, he would support the new bill.
George, who is a Lok Sabha MP from Kottayam, said he had never said he would support the Wakf Amendment Bill. He clarified that his stand was the same as that of the UDF and the Congress, who had supported the resolution in the Kerala Assembly against the Centre’s decision to amend the Waqf Act.
