Elections in five states over and diesal, petrol rates hiked by Rs 10 and Rs. 12.50 on per litre

When the war started between Israel , US on the one side against Iran on 28 th February and continued till more than 45 days with the Strait of Hormuz blocked by Iran though India was allowed to take its ships of Crude oil and Gas with some interruptions, the oil prices weren’t hiked.

Then the international Per Barrel Crude prices were hiked by Hundred and fourteen dollars which were earlier merely 70 to 72 dollars per barrel.

Then the prices of petrol and diesel weren’t increased, though the domestic gas cylinder and commercial cylinders were increased by Rs 60 and 196 to 218 respectively on 14 and 19 kg cylinders.

However, the government didn’t increased the petrol and diesel prices. The reason being the elections in West Bengal , Kerala , Tamilnadu , Assam, Puducherry were to be held. The government was apprehensive of confronting the anger of the electorates and loosing at the hustings.

But now since the elections have been conducted the BJP led NDA government increased the petrol and Diesel prices.

According to the latest order issued by the Ministry and Petroleum the price of Petro has been increased by Rs 10 on Petrol and Rs. 12.50 on high speed diesal.

The order of the ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas says that due to the sharp increase in global crude oil prices by over 100% in recent months, the cost of procurement has risen significantly, dircctly impacting domestic pricing.

As a rcsult, Public Sector Oil Marketing Companics (0MC), including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, are incurring substantial under-recoveries at the retail selling price Ievel, quantified at approximately Rs. 24, 40 per litre on petrol and Rs.104.99 per litre on diesel as on 01.04, 2026.
Such sustaincd under-recoverics are cconomically unsustainable and adversely impact the financial viability and operational capacity of the OMCs, which are responsible for ensuring uninterrupted supply and distribution of petrolcum products across the country.

Continued supprcssion of retail prices in the facc of cscalating input costs distorts market-linked pricing mechanisms and results in accumulation of losses, thereby necessitating corrective pricing measures.
In vicw of the above, a calibratcd upward revision of the retail sclling price of pctrol and dicscl is immcdiatcly warranted to partially offset the prevailing under-recoveries, restore financial stability of the OMCs, and ensure continuity of supply.

Motor Spirit, commonly known as Petrol increased by Rs. 10/- per litre and High Speed Diesel, Upward Revision by
Rs, 12,.50/- per litre said the order signed by Bilichan Ghaman DD, OMC, Undersecretary Ministry of Petroleum and Chemicals , Government of India.
