Journalists’ Long-pending Demands Placed Before Prime Minister – Accredited Journalists Association Appeals for Facilities, Security and Dignity

New Delhi:
In Indian democracy, journalism has always been regarded as the Fourth Pillar. Journalists, who capture the pulse of society, bring the people’s voice to the government, and dare to question those in power, often find themselves living in insecure and neglected conditions. To address these long-standing issues and ensure proper facilities, dignity, and security for the journalistic fraternity, the Accredited Journalists Association (AJA) has submitted a detailed memorandum to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
The association’s National President, Vijay Shanker Chaturvedi, in his letter to the Prime Minister’s Office, emphasized that journalists discharge their responsibilities under all circumstances—be it natural calamities, political upheavals, or social conflicts. Yet, they continue to be deprived of basic facilities such as healthcare, travel concessions, pension, and security measures. “If the government truly wishes to strengthen democracy, it must fulfill these just and genuine demands of journalists,” Chaturvedi said.
Key Demands Raised by Journalists:
Restoration of Railway Concession: Immediate restoration of railway concessions for accredited journalists to facilitate unhindered nationwide travel for news coverage.
Free Medical Treatment: Provision of free medical care for journalists and their families in all government and private hospitals, given the risks involved in their profession.
Regular Advertisements to Small & Medium Newspapers: Ensuring regular government advertisements to small and medium newspapers, many of which are struggling financially. Sustaining them will strengthen grassroots democracy.
Pension for Senior Journalists: A monthly pension of ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 for journalists above 60 years of age, enabling them to lead a dignified life after decades of service.
Establishment of Media Academy: Creation of a National Media Academy to provide training and capacity-building for budding and mid-career journalists, ensuring professionalism and credibility in the field.
Free Metro Facility: Accredited journalists in metropolitan cities should be provided free metro travel passes to ease their mobility for timely news coverage.
Strengthening Journalism, Strengthening Democracy:
Highlighting the urgency, Vijay Shanker Chaturvedi remarked, “Journalists act as a bridge between society and the government. Without them, democracy is incomplete. Yet, it is unfortunate that even minimum facilities are not available to those who hold such a vital role. If the government accepts these demands, it will boost journalists’ morale and strengthen the very foundation of democracy.”
He further added that at a time when fake news and non-professional journalism are on the rise, it is essential to encourage and support recognized, responsible journalists.
A Call for Positive Government Response
The association strongly believes these demands are not only reasonable but also practical. Implementing them will not just bring relief but also uplift the dignity and morale of the journalistic community. The Accredited Journalists Association expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give due consideration to these issues and announce concrete measures to improve the conditions of journalists across the nation.
