Twenty one died in massive fire in Malviya Nagar hotel building

At least 21 persons have succumbed to the severe fire injuries in a Hotel / restaurant at Malviya Nagar near a Fortis hospital after the building built illegally with no fire extingushing equipments caught massive fire. The building was given permission for only six rooms but the owner of the hotel had built 24 rooms in a five story building with a basement as well with several rooms, illegally.
When the fire spread in the building the main gate of the hotel/ restaurant/ guest house was locked and since the fire had reached the top floor the people inside the building have to jump desperately smud panic, risking their lives.
There were several African guests living in the hotel with four of the Nigerian having jumped down from the top stories of the building.
The fire started in the morning hours at 9.30 AM.
The fire brigade vans couldn’t enter the area as the streets were extremelg narrow. Most of those staying inside the building were those who has rented the rooms having come to Max hospital for treatment.
After the massive fire there were smoke all around and some of the occupants were unconscious due to axphixiation and some died due to severe burn injuries having been roasted inside.
What is shocking and surprising to note is the fact that the main entrance of iron gates were locked and the fire brigade officials have to cut those locks after immense efforts before entering the building on massive fire.
Though twenty one persons have died in this tragedy about forty persons were rescued from the building on fire by the police, fire brigade officials and the local people.
In the recent times this is a huge tragedy. The rescued have been immediately ferried to the accident and trauma centre.
According to the TOI report Jitendra Kumar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and an official with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), said emergency response teams were mobilised immediately after the incident was reported.
“As soon as I received information about the incident this morning, we activated our DDMA cell. All EOCs were informed and instructed to reach the spot immediately. I was supposed to leave for a training program myself, but I postponed it and came here instead,” he said.
The owner of the hotel / restaurant / guest house is absconding. Prime minister Narendra Modi has expressed his deepest condolences on this tragedy and sanctioned Rs. Two lakhs to each of the dead and family fty thousands to the injured.
The chief minister of national capital territory Rekha Gupta expressed her grief over the loss of lives and assured that the government was closely monitoring the situation. She said in X :
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the devastating fire incident in Malviya Nagar. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and for strength & courage to all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” she said in a post on social media.
Gupta said teams from the Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, DDMA, CATS Ambulance Services and other emergency response agencies were mobilised immediately after the incident was reported.
The former cabinet minister Saurabh Bharadwaj who is currently the Delhi AAP chief has visited the area and talked to the local residents partung his grief over this tragic incident.
