CHAMPAWAT: One person was killed and three others were injured after a WagonR car veered off the road and fell about 150 metres into a deep gorge in the Banlekh area on the Khatima-Pithoragarh route.
According to police, the car bearing registration number UK05TA5054 was travelling from Khatima to Pithoragarh when it lost control and plunged into the gorge. Four people were on board at the time of the accident.
As soon as information was received, teams from SDRF Champawat and the district police rushed to the spot. With the help of local residents, rescue personnel climbed down into the gorge and carried out the rescue operation. All the injured were pulled out safely and shifted to Champawat District Hospital in 108 ambulances.
Doctors at the hospital declared one person dead. Two of the injured are undergoing treatment, while one person who was seriously injured has been referred to Sushila Tiwari Hospital in Haldwani for advanced care.
SDRF has appealed to drivers on hilly routes to exercise extra caution, control speed on curves and slopes, and be particularly alert during bad weather to prevent such accidents.
