Dronacharya award recipient as an eminent Judo coach Gurcharan Singh Gogi is no more. RIP
The outstanding Indian Judo coach and the first Dronacharya Awardee in Judo, Gurcharan Singh Gogi is no more.
He breathed his last today leaving behind his family, friends and sports fraternity in immense shock.
Eminent Judo player and coach was bestowed with coveted Dronacharya Award for Judo in 2014 by the then president Pranab Mukherjee in a glittering function at President House.
The prestigious Dronacharya award carries a cash prize of Rs 15 lakhs instituted for the very first time in 1985 for outstanding coaches of sports and games named after Drona referred as Dronacharya or Guru Drona in Mahabharata epic, master of advanced military warfare.
Awarded annually by the ministry of sports and youth affairs after meticulous examination by the senior sports officers and experts of high ranks, by a committee constituted by the Ministry and are honoured to have done “outstanding and meritorious work on a consistent basis and enabled sportspersons to excel in international events” over a period of four years.
Two awards are designated for the life time contribution in coaching to produce exemplary n outstanding sport persons accompanying laurels for the nation in various national and international sports events.
The Awards comprise of Rs 15 lakh cash prize along with a bronze statuette and a certificate presented by President of India.
The all of a sudden passing away of Dronacharya recipient in Judo, Gurucharan Singh Gogia has sent shock wave all around, especially in sports fraternity who had to his credit giving India dozens of outstanding judo players of international stature contributing to judo selflessly and with tremendous dedication with integrity and perseverance.
His passing away is an immense loss to sports fraternity especially JUDO. RIP
