An evocative discussion on the life and works of noted theatre personality, poet, writer and former engineer Hem Pant organized at Uttarakhand Sadan, Chanakyapuri.

New Delhi – An evocative discussion on the life and works of noted theatre personality, poet, writer and former engineer Hem Pant was organized at Uttarakhand Sadan, Chanakyapuri.

The gathering brought together eminent personalities from literature, theatre, music, cinema, journalism, art, education and social service, who recalled Pant’s creative journey and his deep contribution to preserving Uttarakhand’s dialects, language and folk culture.

The event, an initiative of Chief Minister’s Media Coordinator Madan Mohan Sati, was held under the chairmanship of former Mayor and Councillor Neema Bhagat, while filmmaker Sanjay Joshi was the Chief Guest. Film producer-director Sushila Rawat and several other distinguished figures from the literary and art world were present on the dais. Delhi BJP Vice President Dr. Vinod Bacheti, Senior Advisor of Amar Sandesh and social worker Dr. K.C. Pandey, among others, participated in the discussion.

Speaking as Chief Guest, Sanjay Joshi said Hem Pant is not just a writer and theatre artist, but a creator deeply connected with the cultural consciousness of Uttarakhand. His plays reflect the reality of society, while his poems carry the essence of nature, the mountains and human emotions. Taking his creative legacy to the next generation is crucial, he said.

Chairing the session, Neema Bhagat said Pant’s life inspires us to stay rooted in our culture and traditions. His plays and writings capture the simplicity, struggle and emotions of the hills. Remembering such creators is a way of honouring our own heritage.

Delhi BJP Vice President Dr. Vinod Bacheti noted that Pant gave expression to folk traditions and cultural heritage through literature and theatre, with emotional depth in his poetry and strong social concern in his writing.

Educationist Dr. Sharat Joshi highlighted the beautiful blend of folk art and culture in his plays.

*Daughter Vandana’s Memoir Moves Audience*

The most touching moment came when Pant’s daughter, Vandana Pathak Joshi, shared her memories. She said her father has always been conscious of passing on his dialect, language, folk traditions and art-culture to the coming generations. For him, Uttarakhand is not just his birthplace but the very foundation of his creativity. He wants the cultural identity of the hills to remain alive despite changing times.

On the occasion, senior theatre artist Kamal Karnatak screened a short documentary on Hem Pant’s life – from his childhood to the present – sensitively portraying his struggles, achievements and many facets of his personality.

Dr. K.C. Pandey, Senior Advisor of Amar Sandesh and President of Magic Academy, said Pant embodies a rare combination of a writer, poet, theatre activist and socially aware individual.

Senior journalist Charu Tiwari said Pant’s literature and theatre cannot be seen in isolation from the folk sentiments of Uttarakhand. He gave voice to mountain life through stage and pen.

Amar Sandesh Editor and journalist Amar Chand said Pant’s creative journey is deeply linked with the folk life and cultural awareness of Uttarakhand, with his work reflecting the local language, lifestyle, social issues and human emotions – an important bridge for the new generation to connect with its roots.

Veteran musician Virendra Singh Rai Negi said Pant’s creativity bears the deep imprint of folk culture, with the same intimacy that defines the folk music of the hills.

Filmmaker Sushila Rawat said his creative thought went beyond literature; he brought the life and culture of Uttarakhand alive through theatre and art.

Theatre veteran Khushal Singh Rawat said Pant’s theatre has always been rooted in cultural identity, portraying the common man’s life, struggle, humour and emotions together.

Pragya Art President Lakshmi Rawat said his works show a beautiful harmony of art and life, while Himalayan Cultural Art Manch President Neeraj Bawari said his theatre clearly reflects the folk life of the state.

The discussion, held under the aegis of Uttarayani Sanstha, concluded successfully. The cooperation of Smt. Tara Bawari, Nitya Joshi and family members – from preparations to coordination – played a key role in making the event dignified and successful.
