Opposition March To EC Stopped, Rahul Gandhi, Hundreds Of MPs Detained From Akashvani Bhavan, Taken To Kingsway Police Lines

New Delhi: Police on Tuesday detained Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi along with hundreds of MPs and opposition leaders from the Akashvani Bhavan premises on Parliament Street and took them to Kingsway Camp Police Lines in North Delhi.

The detention came after nearly a 9-hour standoff.

According to Delhi Police, a total of 260 people including 10 MPs were removed as a law-and-order measure.

The INDIA bloc MPs led by Rahul Gandhi had taken out a march from Parliament to Nirvachan Sadan, the Election Commission headquarters, barely 300 metres from Akashvani Bhavan, demanding a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged “vote chori” and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and seeking his resignation.

Police stopped the march near NITI Aayog office.

After being stopped, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Pawan Khera, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and others entered Akashvani Bhavan premises and staged a dharna under a tree, refusing to leave till they were allowed to meet the CEC.

Heavy security was deployed around Akashvani Bhawan, Parliament Street and EC office with multiple barricades, RAF, tear-gas launchers and water cannons.

Around 8 PM, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma along with a large posse of police moved in to clear the premises. Visuals showed Rahul Gandhi being forcibly removed and put into a police bus. Priyanka Gandhi was taken to New Police Lines, Kingsway Camp, while Rahul Gandhi was also taken to Kingsway Camp. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka were literally picked after tremendous force pulling them as if the somebody having committed sine crime are being lifted by legs and hands and being pushed inside the police vans.

After his release late night, Rahul Gandhi posted on X, “To save the traitors of democracy, the remnants of democracy have been dragged through the mud. There will be accounting – not a single traitor will be spared.”

The Election Commission has said it had not received any formal request from parties for a meeting and defended its electoral roll revision process.
