Climate change activist Sonam Wangchuk is finally released after being in jail since

Renowned environmentalist, climate activist of repute and an IItian who always fought for Ladakh and its people demanding Ladakh to be brought under Shedule 6 of the constitution having been on several days indefinite hunger strike finally being arrested under the National security act and jailed for the last several months has today been released after the Indian government revoked his detention under the National Security Act (NSA).

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated the decision was taken to support peace and ensure dialogue in Ladakh.

Climate change activist Sonam Wangchuk had been detained since 26 September 2025, and his case had drawn public and legal attention with media earlier giving him tremendous coverage but lateron forgot this icon despite the fact that his arrest under the NSA was opposed by all sections of the people.

Officials of the ministry of Home affairs confirmed that the revocation is a lawful exercise of preventive detention powers and did not comment on any ongoing investigations.

In a Government Statement and Public Response the MHA emphasised that the move was intended to maintain stability and promote constructive communication in the region.

It may be recalled that according to the Home ministry his detention followed unrɇst in Leh, Ladakh, where protɇsts over political and constitutional issues escalated.

The NSA allows preventive detention for reasons of public order and security.

The ministry of Home affairs stand says that ensuring public safety is important, but respecting civil liberties and encouraging dialogue strengthens democracy.

How can authorities and communities work together to balance order and citizens’ rights?

Mrs Sonam Wangchuk’s wife have been running from pillar to posts, from the lower court to the supreme Court to seek justice singularly airing her grievances and appealing to the government agencies to release him as he had done nothing that invites the attention of the government to arrest him under the draconion law NSA. The progressive activists and intellectuals and environmentalists have expressed their concern over his alleged arbitrary arrests.
