Health minister Mansukh Mandaviya says the system in hospitals need to be changed when hit by a guard at Safdarjung hospital

The union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya visited All India Institute of medical Sciences yesterday and inaugurated the Digital Health and Medical Education exhibition on the occasion of the 65 th foundation day of AIIMS congratulating and thanking the entire staff of the premier medical institution including doctors for serving the nation with dedication, sincerety and commitment.

The union health minister who was hit by a stick by a guard at Safdarjung hospital few days ago when he went to the hospital to inspect the existing patient services said that we need to ensure the best possible treatment to patients of AIIMS and government hospitals who throng here in large numbers and lessen the waiting time resulting in tremendous inconvenience to the patients coming for treatment from various nook and corners of the country.

The minister reiterated the need to increase the doctors as well as giving maximum facilities to the patients who are made to wait for long hours and suffer harrassment at the hands of the staff as witnessed by him during his surprise inspection at Safdarjung hospital.

While lauding the doctors and staff of AIIMS for serving the nation with dedication and perseverance union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that there is no need to employ more guards but to give maximum facilities to the patients and avoid their harrassment as they come here to seek treatment not to fight.

It may be recalled that the union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya who is not a popular face having been a new union health minister has made a surprise check at Safdarjung hospital to see for himself the plight of the patients.

When during inspection he saw that an old patient of more than seventy years not provided a stretcher by any guard proving to be non supportive to patients he was shocked n stunned. When he sat on a bench during the inspection the guard not recognising him hit him with a stick misbehaving badly.

The minister has revealed the incident to prime minister Narendra Modi as well and the latter asked whether he had suspended the erring guard or not. The minister replied in negative saying that the system needs to be changed.

It may be recalled that in view of the increasing pressure of patients at AIIMS, Safdarjung hospital and other government hospitals of Delhi, from various parts of the country, security guards employed in hospitals who are immensely instrumental in maintaining the discipline to manage crowds sometimes get arrogant.

While they are immensely helpful in managing the rush of patients at hospitals there have been complaints of their misconduct and misbehaviour as well but after the digital appointments the situation has eased to great extent. But what happened with the minister health at Safdarjung is a clearcut example of the misconduct prevailing in government hospitals which need to be rectified.

  1. The question is –Who would alleviate the problems of patients coming to the hospital and what would be the way !!? I have some solutions as I had been to AIIMS many times to help patients and donate blood . The competent authority must approach me thru e-mail.

  2. What a surprise visit by the union health minister at Safdarjung hospital. If the guard misbehaved with the minister, anyone can imagine how common people will be going to be treated in hospitals. ‘The system should be changed’, well said.
