On November 29, 2025, a very sensitive and heartbreaking incident occurred in the Tharali police station area.
Reports were received of a newborn baby’s head lying in a field below the road leading to Van Mundoli, just beyond the village of Hat Kalyani.
Upon receiving information about this heinous and unfortunate incident, police from Tharali Police Station immediately arrived at the scene.
Given the seriousness and sensitivity of the matter, Chamoli Superintendent of Police, Surjeet Singh Panwar, took immediate cognizance.
He has directed teams to be sent to the spot to track down the culprits and gather scientific evidence.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Karnaprayag, Trivendra Singh Rana has been entrusted with the personal supervision and command of the investigation.
CO Karnaprayag and Sub-Inspector Sanjay Negi are conducting extensive inquiries with local residents and gathering every detail related to the incident. Police are investigating this inhumane act.
The police is committed to identifying and arresting the criminals who committed this inhuman act as soon as possible.
The important task of collecting evidence at the scene of crime has been efficiently completed yesterday by the Field Unit (Forensic Team).
The dog squad team has also reached the scene of crime and is conducting intensive search in the surrounding areas.
The SOG team is also scanning CCTV footage from the area.
The police immediately took possession of the newborn’s head, prepared a Panchnama, and sent the body parts to the Sub-District Hospital, Karnaprayag where it has been kept safe in the freezer for 72 hours for identification efforts.
After all identification efforts have been exhausted for 72 hours, a formal post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Crucial DNA samples have also been preserved to aid future investigations.
