The three men working in a shipyard in Indonesia hailing from India have been arrested and sentenced to death by the Indonesia court on 25 April 2025 after being convicted in Narcotics related offences considered to be extremely serious inviting capital punishment in Indonesia. All the three are Indian nationals from Southern India. The matter is extremely serious and can be send to gallows in the near future. Their capital punishment sentence already given by the judge of the Tanjung Balai Karimun district court of Indonesia panicked their family members in India with their wives approaching the Delhi High Court with a request to come to their rescue by directing the Indian Consulate in Indonesia to use their good offices to help their husbands in distress awaiting death sentences as they are the sole bread earners for their families leading to financial crisis. On hearing the petitioner wives of the three convicts by the Indonesia district court , the Delhi High Court judge Sachin Dutta directed the Ministry of External Affairs to seriously look into this issue and use their good offices to diplomatically engage with the Indonesian government to come to their rescue by way of safeguarding their rights using the benefit of any relevant international conventions or bilateral understanding reached between India and Indonesia. The three convicts accorded death sentence by the Indonesian district court on Narcotics related charges are Raju Muthukumaran, Selvadurai Dinakaran, and Govindasamy Vimalkandhan. The High Court will be hearing the matter on May 6 , 2025 and the counsel of MEA has accepted the notice on the ministry of external affairs behalf and sought time to get further instructions. All the three petitioner wives have urged the DHC judge for early and speedy legal action from India side to avoid any further consequences as they fear that if there is delay on Indian consulate’s part the death sentence may be executed. The role of the Indian consulate in Indonesia after the Delhi High Court’s directions to do their best to safeguard the three Indian nationals accorded capital punishment expeditiously becomes more significant now.
