Dehradun

Dehradun based SDC Foundation is gearing up to organize a large-scale collective event on World Earth Day, April 22, along with several other organizations. On this occasion, programs and plastic collection drives are being organized in numerous universities, schools, and other institutions. This information was provided by the founder of SDC, Anoop Nautiyal.

The theme for World Earth Day this year is “Planet Vs Plastic”. The theme raises awareness about the serious threats posed to the Earth due to plastic pollution. It also sends a message to initiate a global movement to reduce plastic usage and production and to spread awareness.

Anoop Nautiyal mentioned that the SDC Foundation has been working on plastic waste management for quite some time. They see the theme of “Planet Vs Plastic” for World Earth Day 2024 as an opportunity to address the issue of sustainable plastic waste management in Uttarakhand in a collective manner.

Keeping this in mind, World Earth Day is being celebrated in collaboration with many other institutions. It was informed that Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board, Dehradun Cantonment Board, Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Graphic Era Hill University, Graphic Era Institute of Medical Sciences, Wildlife Institute of India, and Hope Town School are the key collaborators in these programs. Additionally, more than 20 government and private schools will also organize programs. He expressed gratitude to all institutions and schools for collectively participating in the Earth Day program.

According to Anoop Nautiyal, various competitions will be organized in schools to raise awareness among school children about the dangers of single use plastic and to encourage them to reduce and recycle their plastic consumption. Single-use plastic collection drives will also be carried out through these programs. The waste plastic collected will be brought to SDC Foundation’s plastic waste segregation and learning center and finally recycled through partner organizations.

It is noteworthy that the foundation has been conducting several programs related to plastic in Dehradun and surrounding areas. Recently, the SDC Foundation entered into an agreement with Airbus, the world’s leading aircraft manufacturer, to establish 300 plastic banks in Dehradun. Under this agreement, more than 100 plastic banks have already been established. More plastic banks will be established in the coming days. After collecting the plastic waste in plastic banks, it is sent to CSIR-IIP and Dehradun Cantonment Board for recycling after a second round of segregation at the SDC center.
