Ritu Khanduri becomes first woman speaker after defeating Surendra Negi of Congress avenging her father’s defeat in 2012
The first woman speaker of Uttarakhand assembly Ritu Khanduri is one of the luckiest woman politician, who though is the daughter of the former Uttarakhand CM, twice, retired Major general Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri and one of the successful Transport and National Highway Authority she was first denied the ticket from Yamkeshwar Assembly constituency even being the sitting lawmaker for incompetence, but then fielded from Kotdwar, predicted as a gone case by news analysts. Wife of the union health secretary with her worth of Rs. 7.26 crores Ritu Khanduri, got a new lease of life after Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath addressed a massive impressive public meeting at Kotdwar n PM too in Srinagar. She astonished all after defeating a former health minister of Uttarakhand and Congress heavy weight Surendra Singh Negi, having tremendous clout in his traditional home constituency. He surprise victory was indeed a dream come true for her who had lost all hopes of her political revival. Her father former CM (R) Major General Bhuban Chandra Khanduri had lost from this seat while the CM in 2012 elections. Her elevation as the first woman speaker of Uttarakhand after being earlier denied ticket from Yamkeshwar n then from a tough seat of Kotdwar, in fact is no less than a miracle. Today she is a happiest woman leader in BJP. According to her bank details while she has 77 lakh rupees in her bank account she has jewels worth Rs. 40 lakhs. Her brother who had joined Congress before 2019 had contested on Congress ticket from Pauri Garhwal parliamentary constituency having lost to the then BJP candidate Tirath Singh Rawat. He could not progress politically since then while his sister Ritu despite having no political background of her own, trounced back on the political track becoming MLA twice first from Yamkeshwar and then from Kotdwar. She politically took the revenge from Surendra Singh Negi defeating him this time who defeated her father in 2012, finally becoming the first woman speaker. Her father Major General ( R) Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri was known for being one of the best ministers of transport and national Highways during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure for building the wide network of national highways all over India and an honest Uttarakhand CM twice first in 2007 to 2009 and then 2011 to 2012. He was member of parliament from Pauri Garhwal in the 16 th Lok Sabha.
