According to the anguishing news poring in, a resident of Village Barai, in Rikhnikhal block namely Chuki Devi Bharadwaj who is a widow has gone to the nearby jungle to arrange fodder for the domestic animals.

While she was busy arranging green fodder ( grass etc) for the domestic animals, a man eater on prowl for human flesh pounced on her and injured her grievously.

It may be recalled that man eater leopards, tigers including wild bear attacks have become a common phenomenon in Garhwal and Kumaon divisions of Uttarakhand with women, children, youths n senior citizens becoming their easy victim and the government, its forest department becoming a mere spectator.

A month or so ago a professional hunter Mr. Bhandari was hired by the forest department to kill a female man eater Guldaar ( Leopard) called “Bagh”, in Uttarakhand after it brutally killed a seven year old girl after grabbing her from a house compound in Tehri Garhwal.

The predator was killed after two days of search finally the villagers of the area including resident of surrounding villages heaving a great sigh of relief.

There have been tremendous dreaded incidents of man eater human killings in various districts of Uttarakhand with such tragic news appearing after every second day in Pauri Garhwal, Chamoli, Tehri, Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Nainital n Almora districts.

The government of Uttarakhand’s forest department should compile a concrete statistical data of the man eater killings n injured persons including tracking n kills of man eaters to arrive at the quantam of loss to human lives.
The Vanadhikar Andolan Sammittee founder Kishore Upadhyay who is now a BJP lawmaker from Tehri Garhwal had been earlier demanding Rs 25 lakhs as financial compensation for the bereaved families including a government job to a member of the deceased. But now, what has happed to his demand is anyone’s guess?

  1. Maneater hunt is on the rise. The Govt is taking it in routine but one family is
    finished by each attack.
Instead of land consolidation, high time govt should resort to forest consolidation on priority. Grow wild fruits in jungle so that all wild lives are contained there and villagers roam around their fields freely.
