High Court of Delhi rejects the Habeas Corpus petition for quashing his arrest by DP

New Delhi, Sept 7: The Delhi High Court on Monday rejected the habeas corpus petition filed by self-styled Hindu influencer Swatantra Bharadwaj who was arrested in Uttar Pradesh and brought to Delhi and remanded to 14 days judicial custody.
The two-judge bench comprising Justices Navin Chawla and Ravindra judeja observed that the petitioner should approach the same court which had remanded him to 14 days judicial custody instead of approaching the High Court directly by way of habeas corpus and dismissed the plea as not maintainable.
Bharadwaj was arrested by Parliament Street police from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh after massive protest demonstration by Citizens for Justice and Peace after he openly and shamelessly admitted in a podcast of having committed the crime of deliberately injuring Dalit girl Nishu Azad’s father on the head with his KADAA who received seven to eight stitches. In the same podcast he had boasted that he was moving freely on July 23 after committing the crime and that police had done nothing to arrest him.
The remarks triggered outrage among people, politicians and mediapersons on social media, following which Parliament Street police registered a case and arrested him and produced him before the jurisdictional court which sent him to 14 days judicial custody.
After his arrest some Hindu right-wing activists staged protests in his support, while leaders including Union Minister Chirag Paswan, Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra and Bihar Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary, with whom he claimed direct and close relations, have denied having any link with him.Not only this but the union minister Chirag Paswan has written a letter to Delhi police to arrest him and lodge FIR under the stringent sections of the BNS against him.
