New Delhi: High drama unfolded in central Delhi today, 6th October, as the INDIA bloc marched from Parliament to the Election Commission of India headquarters demanding resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
More than 300 Opposition MPs led by LoP Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee, NCP-SP’s Supriya Sule and others started the march around 10:30 AM from Parliament’s Makar Dwar carrying a “Save Democracy” banner and raising slogans of “Vote Chor Gaddi Chhod” and “Gully gully me shor hai, Gyanesh Kumar chor hai”.
The march is against alleged irregularities and “vote theft” in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being carried out since June 2025.
Delhi Police with more than five companies of paramilitary put up multi-layered barricades 150-200 metres from Nirvachan Sadan near NITI Aayog / Akashvani Bhawan and stopped the march citing prohibitory orders under Section 163.
After being stopped, MPs sat on a dharna on the road. Rahul Gandhi climbed the police barricade waving the Tricolour and holding a placard that read “Gyanesh, it’s done bro! Time to resign” – he also posted the same on X. Priyanka Gandhi and several MPs including Akhilesh Yadav, Abhishek Banerjee were briefly detained and taken away in buses.
After release, Rahul and Priyanka refused to leave and entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises next to ECI office, attempting to reach the poll panel through it. Visuals showed them sitting under a tree inside Akashvani Bhawan with KC Venugopal, Deepender Hooda and others, continuing the sit-in. Congress took a dig saying “Jan Ki Baat is being broadcast from Akashvani”.
The ECI has maintained that SIR was done as per established procedure, while BJP accused Opposition of misleading public and questioning institutions without basis.
Aam Aadmi Party and DMK did not participate, while Biju Janata Dal which is not part of INDIA bloc said it will join the march.
