Going to Patna to meet those in jail
New Delhi: All India Students’ Association leader and JNU PhD scholar Neha Bora has accused the present political dispensation of going back on its promises made to the CJP delegation regarding the Jantar Mantar agitation.
Bora, who had earlier sat on a 23-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar along with climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, said that despite assurances that all cases registered against students and youths during the protest would be withdrawn and that they would not be harassed or victimized, the government has not fulfilled them.
According to Bora, hundreds of Jantar Mantar participants continue to remain in jail on what she called “cooked up and serious charges”, with some even booked for murder. She said several student and youth leaders are still behind bars.
Bora, who is leaving for Patna tomorrow, named MLA Sandeep Saurabh, Dhananjay, Deepankar, Divyam and several other activists as being lodged in Beur jail in Bihar. She said all of them were part of the movement demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and seeking reforms in the NEET examination system to prevent paper leaks in the future.
She also targeted the West Bengal government and the Chief Minister, alleging that 14 activists, most of them Muslims, have been jailed in the state and that 70 more students and youth activists are likely to be arrested.
Appealing to the people of Bihar to join the fight for justice, Bora said they would oppose the crackdown “tooth and nail” and urged the government to honor the promises made to the CJP delegation. She demanded the immediate release of all detained activists and the cancellation of all FIRs registered against them.
