Delhi police central district solved 1.5 crores robbery case arresting five culprits
New Delhi: In a major breakthrough, Delhi Police’s Central District has solved a sensational Rs 1.5 crore armed robbery case and arrested five persons who allegedly looted a delivery agent at gunpoint after conducting extensive reconnaissance of cash movement in Chandni Chowk.
According to DCP Central Rohit Rajbir Singh, the robbery took place on the evening of September 7 near the Geeta Colony flyover on Delhi’s Outer Ring Road. The complainant, a cash collection agent and his colleague, were carrying Rs 3 crore divided into two bags containing Rs 1.5 crore each. They had collected the cash from Church Mission T-Point, Chandni Chowk area and were travelling in an auto-rickshaw towards Safdarjung Enclave to deliver the money to a businessman involved in property business. At around 7:30 pm when the auto reached near the Geeta Colony flyover, three men riding a black motorcycle intercepted it. Two of them brandished objects resembling pistols, covered the passengers from both sides and fled towards ITO with one bag containing approximately Rs 1.5 crore.
A case was registered at Daryaganj police station on September 8 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act. Joint teams of Daryaganj police station, Special Staff and Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of Central District were formed and a massive investigation was launched involving scanning of CCTV footage from Chandni Chowk to Geeta Colony, technical surveillance and human intelligence.
Police revealed that the robbery was the result of detailed reccé. The accused had identified the victims near T-Point, Old Delhi Railway Station, tracked their movement and followed them after they boarded the auto. Investigation further revealed that the gang had allegedly attempted to execute the plan on earlier occasions but was unsuccessful.
After sustained efforts over four days, police got the first breakthrough with the arrest of Suraj Pandey, 20, an app-based Rapido rider, from Anand Vihar bus terminal on September 12 while he was attempting to flee to a remote location in Uttar Pradesh. On his disclosure, police arrested four more accused from Delhi, Haryana and Punjab — Sandeep alias Sandy who was riding the motorcycle, Deepak Goswami who was riding pillion, Rinku, a http://B.Com graduate who had worked as an accountant in Karol Bagh, and Adarsh, who holds http://B.Com and http://B.Ed degrees and had run a tuition centre. The sixth associate, identified as Prince, is still absconding.
During interrogation it was revealed that the pistols used in the crime were in fact pistol-shaped lighters, which have been recovered. Police have recovered nearly Rs 1 crore of the looted cash, along with the clothes and shoes allegedly worn during the offence, a motorcycle purchased for around Rs 2.10 lakh from the robbery proceeds and a mobile phone bought with the looted money.
Police said further investigation is underway to apprehend the absconding accused, trace the remaining cash and ascertain the source and intended destination of the huge cash movement.
