Dehradun: In a major crackdown, the Excise Department has busted a liquor home delivery network that was supplying alcohol to students living in hostels and PGs in the Bidholi area of Dehradun.

Orders were taken through a WhatsApp group and a rate card, and youths were hired on a monthly salary of around Rs 15,000 for doorstep delivery.

According to the department, the mastermind of the network is 25-year-old Garvit alias Vikrant, a law student at a private university in Bidholi. He used to bring cheap and imported liquor from Delhi-Haryana and supply it in Dehradun at a premium. Majority of the brands were of Scotch whisky brought from Haryana at cheaper rates and illegally smuggled in vans n cars to Dehradun. The network seems to be vast.

During raids, officials made a shocking recovery — bottles of whiskies of various brands were found stocked in cupboards, hidden under beds, and kept in scooties and bikes ready for supply to hostels.

In the operation so far, about 10 boxes of imported liquor, three scooties and one car used for smuggling have been recovered, along with the arrest of several accused.

The main accused Garvit surrendered in the CJM court on October 7 and has been sent to jail. The Excise Department is now working to nab the entire network linked to him.
