New Delhi: A 20-year-old student pursuing higher education in the US died after the car he was driving fell into a water-filled open drain in southwest Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Yashvendra, son of an Indian Army officer. According to Delhi Police, a PCR call was received at Vasant Kunj South Police Station regarding a fatal road accident. A police team reached the spot and found the car overturned inside the drain near the Nangal Dewat traffic signal.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Yashvendra was driving with a female friend towards her residence in Vasant Kunj when the car reportedly skidded on a slippery stretch at a sharp turn and veered off the road into the drain. The woman managed to get out of the vehicle and sustained injuries, while Yashvendra remained trapped in the driver’s seat. Due to the depth of water, locals and police could not immediately reach him. Fire and rescue teams later pulled him out, but he succumbed during treatment.
Police said the car belonged to the co-passenger. Both Yashvendra and the woman were students at the same educational institution in the US.
Following the accident, eyewitnesses and residents raised concerns over the lack of safety measures at the spot. They alleged that repeated complaints had been made about the open and accident-prone drain, but no action was taken. Legal proceedings have been initiated and further investigation into the matter is underway.
