Indian Legal System: A Review” — Intellectual Discourse on Contemporary Legal Challenges and Judicial Reforms

On the occasion of its 10th Foundation Day, JIGYASA organized an intellectual, thought-provoking, and enriching programme on the theme “Indian Legal System: A Review” on May 13, 2026, at the prestigious Speaker Hall of the Constitution Club of India, Rafi Marg, New Delhi.
The programme witnessed serious and meaningful deliberations on contemporary issues related to the Indian justice delivery system, prevailing legal challenges, and the urgent need for judicial reforms. Eminent legal experts, jurists, academicians, policymakers, social thinkers, representatives of civil society, and young legal professionals participated in the event.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of JIGYASA, Shri Raj Kumar Bhatia, highlighted the inspiring ten-year journey and achievements of the organization. He stated that JIGYASA has consistently endeavoured to satisfy the intellectual curiosity of inquisitive minds through introspection, dialogue, and meaningful discussions on contemporary social, constitutional, and national issues. He also formally introduced the keynote speaker, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Former Judge of the Supreme Court of India and Former Chairperson of the National Green Tribunal, as well as the Hon’ble Attorney General for India, Shri R. Venkataramani.
Among the dignitaries present on the dais were Hon’ble Mr. Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Former Judge of the Supreme Court of India; Shri R. Venkataramani, Attorney General for India; Shri Raj Kumar Bhatia, Chairman, JIGYASA; and Shri Satish Minocha, Secretary, JIGYASA. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Shri Munish Kumar Gaur, Trustee of JIGYASA, while the proceedings of the programme were conducted by Shri Rakesh Pandey.
The programme was attended by former Governor Shri Jagdish Mukhi, noted thinker Shri K. N. Govindacharya, professors from the University of Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University, senior advocates from the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court, senior journalists, former judges, administrative officers, industrialists, and several distinguished and enlightened personalities from Delhi.
The keynote address was delivered by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, Former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, while the programme was presided over by the Hon’ble Attorney General for India, Shri R. Venkataramani. The speakers shared profound and insightful views on various dimensions of the Indian judicial system. Major subjects discussed included judicial accountability, delay in disposal of cases and the growing pendency of litigation, accessibility of justice for common citizens, legal awareness, police reforms, mediation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, constitutional governance, and the need for progressive legal reforms in tune with changing social realities.
The speakers also highlighted the grave situation of nearly 54 million pending cases across courts in the country and discussed in detail the necessity for practical, institutional, and structural reforms to effectively address this challenge.
During the deliberations, special emphasis was laid on strengthening public confidence in the justice delivery system and making justice affordable, accessible, transparent, effective, and time-bound. The need for greater institutional sensitivity towards weaker and marginalized sections of society, along with enhancement of legal literacy, was also underscored.
The gathering also acknowledged the central role of the Constitution of India in safeguarding democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights.
The speakers observed that continuous introspection and constructive reforms are essential to make the justice delivery system more effective, accountable, and people-centric.
The programme concluded with an engaging and interactive session in which participants exchanged views on judicial reforms, ethical legal practices, mediation, institutional accountability, and the role of legal professionals in nation-building and strengthening social harmony.
