The World Para Athletics Championships ( WPA) are the biggest event in the world for any single sports discipline outside the Paralympics, held once every two years.
Following celebrated editions in Kobe and Paris etc, the global spotlight now shifts to India, not only as a host, but as a nation stepping forward with a world-class vision.
This is a defining moment for the country.
Hosting the WPA Championships affirms India’s readiness to stage global sporting events and serves as a strategic milestone in our roadmap towards bidding for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
At the core of this championship lies the most critical element: the track — the stage where champions are made and records are broken.
The organisers of WPA have chosen the MONDO track, the same surface used in every Olympic Games since 1976, as part of our vision to deliver the best-ever World Championships.
This decision is backed not only by international precedence but also by the strong recommendations of India’s top athletes, including Olympic and Paralympic champions and medalists such as Neeraj Chopra, Parveen Kumar and Sumit Antil.
Mondo tracks, used in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and scheduled for the LA 2028 Paralympic Games, are widely regarded as the gold standard for track and field events, being the preferred choice in the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, and World Championships.
MONDO is globally recognised for its unmatched speed and responsiveness, giving athletes the best possible chance to deliver record-breaking performances.
Its proven credibility adds prestige to the event, while also symbolising India’s commitment to providing elite-level sporting infrastructure.
A key measure of the event’s success will be the number of world records and championship records set, and this world-class track lays the foundation for that legacy.
For years, the absence of a world-class track has held back India’s athletes and para-athletes. But under the leadership of the current government, and in alignment with Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision, this is changing. We are building the right infrastructure, creating the right opportunities, and setting the right global benchmarks said the organisers of WPA championships.
This investment is not only about meeting international standards — it’s about giving para-athletes the conditions they deserve to perform at their best. Records are not broken by chance; they’re broken when athletes are supported by the right infrastructure, coaching, and belief.
More than a venue upgrade, it’s a symbol of India’s deepening commitment to inclusive sports development, enabling the next generation of para-athletes to pursue excellence on home soil and inspiring a nation in the process.
