Will the Kerala origin nurse in Yemen whose hanging has been postponed temporarily be pardoned ?

The Palakkad, Kerala origin Nurse named Nimisha Priya whose capital punishment has been postponed for the time being due to the Indian government’s diplomatic efforts and some religious gurus of Kerala in Yemen was to be hanged yesterday on 16 th July, 2025.

The religious Guru of the minorities ” Sunni ” sect from Kerala A.P. Abu Bakar Musalier and the government at the diplomatic level had intervened in this vexed issue.

During the negotiation the family of the deceased Tal Abdo Mehandi was approached and requested for reprieve including compensating the family with the blood money.

The government of Yemen has been requested to pardon her including efforts made to approach the bereaved family with the request for pardon with blood money but the family seems to be adamant for the capital punishment to Nimisha Priya referring to the Sharia law Qisas.

Qisas refers to retribution or retaliation, where the punishment is similar to the crime committed, such as the death penalty for murder. Tazir, on the other hand, is a discretionary punishment decided by a judge based on the circumstances of the case, and may include the death penalty in certain situations.

However, still a meeting is expected with the family to exert request pressure on them to pardon the nurse Nimisha Priya to be represented by her counsel senior advocate Subhash Chandran.

During this meeting, the members of the deceased Talal Abdo Mehandi and the member of the Yeman Shoora Council Sheikh Hamid Umer will also be present.

The religious minority priest Musalier of Kerala who is seriously involved in this settlement has roped in the services of his one time trusted friend of Yemen and renowned scholar Sheikh Habib Umer.

According to the news on the request of Habib Umer some members of the deceased Talal Abdo Mehadi and the chief justice of Hudaida state court have reached Damar where this issue is to be discussed threadbare to pardon the nurse.

Scholar Shiekh Hamid Umar has quite a good say in the political scenario of Yemen. It is believed that the bereaved family of the deceased is probably ready to re consider the matter of pardon giving it a second thought though they have earlier refused the blood money offer. It is however officially not confirmed whether they have agreed for reconsidering pardoning Nimisha Priya. The refusal of the blood money has for the time being given up all optimism for mercy to Nimisha Priya whose hanging has been temporarily postponed.

It may be recalled that Nimisha Priya had come to Yamen from Palakkad Kerala in 2008 and was in an abused business relationship with the deceased Abdo Talal Mehadi. Nimisha’s story is well known now. A trained nurse who went to Yemen for work in 2008, she found herself entangled in an abusive partnership with her Yemeni business associate, Talal Abdo Mahdi. In 2017, she was convicted of sedating him – allegedly to recover her passport – but he died of an overdose. Out of panic, she dismembered his body and attempted to hide the crime. She was eventually awarded the death sentence and then, the date was set.
