The chief minister of Bengal and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Bannerjee has appealed to union home minister yesterday not to hurry while modifying the present criminal laws of the country introduced by the Britishers several decades ago during the pre- independence era. She has appealed to the minister to bring unanimity between the stake holders and various political parties first discussing them threadbare before taking any formal decision in this regard.
In a letter written to the union home minister Amit Shah, who is on the tour of West Bengal, chief minister Mamata Bannerjee said that there would be upside down modification in present criminal law which will impact the political system of the day.
Kindly recall that the central government has brought the three ordinances to replace the three laws introduced during the British colonial era viz Indian Penal Code, CRPC 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act 1872.
The new laws that will replace these obsolete laws introduced during the British Colonial era are Indian Judicial Act, Indian Citizens Security Act and Indian Evidence Act.
There is every possibility of these bills to be passed during the winters session of parliament.
The West Bengal chief minister said that she is highly confident and optimistic that the modification in these obsolete laws will become the basis of Punitive criminal justice system.
The replacement of the old laws by the new Punitive criminal laws will also put long-term impact on our polity said the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Benerjee.
While emphatically terming these modifications as also impacting the people of the country the WB chief minister demanded that all the stake holders should be brought into confidence first than getting all these three bills passed in both houses of Parliament unilaterally.
She also expressed apprehensions that these news bills may be used against the opponents of the ruling party’s political dispensation. This letter of West Bengal chief minister written to union home minister Amit Shah is important because earlier too she had expressed her opposition to the centre pertaining to the bill regarding the modification in a BSF related law. The INDIA has already opposed these new bills strongly.
