Vinesh Phogat’s all hopes dashed. CAS dismissed her appeal for joint Silver medal in Paris Olympics
The petition of Vinesh Phogat filed in the Court of Arbitration for Sports had been rejected/ dismissed in which she had appealed to give her the joint Silver medal as she had qualified the quarter and semifinal final defeating the world class Gold medalist four time World Champion wrestler of Japan and Ukraine maintaining her requisite weight and entered the final in which she was disqualified on the day of her final bout due to her weight going up by just 100 grams.
According to the latest news the operative part of the final decision of the CAS is out with the detailed order expected later on.
In its initial order issued on Wednesday the CAS said that the application filed by Vinesh Phogat on 7 th August 2024 has been dismissed.
Phogat who was disqualified on the day of her final bout with an American Wrestler for increase in her weight by just 100 grams creating quite a furore and tension in Indian sports circles especially in wrestling fraternity and her country with even prime minister Narendra Modi while boosting her morale advising her to approach the CAS for justice.
Prime minister Narendra Modi had specifically send a special message on his social media handle X earlier twitter encouraging and consoling her.
Badly disgruntled over the decision of the International Olympics Committee disqualifying her, disgruntled Vinesh Phogat approached the CAS with an appeal to award her the joint Silver Medal as she wasn’t disqualified when she entered the final qualifying the quarter final and semifinal.
Vinesh was represented by the senior supreme Court lawyers Harish Salve and Viduspat Singhania.
Initially the proceedings commenced on August 9 and the CAS promised to give the judgement on Saturday which was thereafter postponed for 13 th August. But the judgement finally arrived on 14 th August Wednesday demoralising everyone as everyone was hopeful for a favourable decision.
Vinesh had delayed her flight and was in Paris hoping to get positive outcome but unfortunately luck wasn’t in her favour. After her disqualification Vinesh was so badly demoralised and disgruntled that she announced about her retirement from wrestling and tweeting a message to her mother that she has been defeated and badly demoralised and wrestling has won declaring her retirement.
