Vinesh Phogat hopes to get justice after her plea accepted by CAS with apex court advocate Salve representing her !

The international Gold medal winner in Asian and Common Wealth games Olympian Vinesh Phogat who has defeated World number one woman wrestler of Japan Yui Susaki, Ukraine’s woman wrestler Oksana Livach and Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez to enter the final match in Paris Olympics in 50 kg weight category has approached the Court of Arbitration for Sports yesterday and her appeal for giving him the joint Silver medal has been accepted which is being fought for her by the senior Supreme Court advocate Harish Salve. This is indeed a very satisfying news for Vinesh Phogat who has been disqualified by the International Olympics committee for increasing her weight by 100 grams on the day she was to compete with the American woman wrestler under the 50 kilogram weight category. According to the press release issued by Court of Arbitration for Sports tribunal DEL DEPORTE – An application was filed at the CAS ( Court of Arbitration for Sports ) Division at 16.45 CEST on 7 th August by the Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat ( applicant) in relation to the decision taken by United World Wrestling ( UWW) to replace her, because of her failed second weigh in, before the Gold Medal match of the Women’s Freestyle 50 Kg competition at the Olympics Games Paris 2024 that was due to commence the same day ( the challenged decision) at 18.15 CEST. The press release adds that the applicant initially sought a decision from the CAS ad hoc decision annulling the challenged decision and ordering another weigh in before the final match as well as the declaration that she be declared eligible and qualified to participate in the final. However, she did not request urgent interim measures. The CAS ad-hoc divisions procedure is fast but it was not possible for a decision on the merits to be issued within an hour’s time, bearing very much in the mind that the Respondent UWW would have had to be heard first. The procedure is however, ongoing and the Applicant has confirmed that she seeks the annulment of the Challenged decision and that she requests to be awarded a shared Silver medal. According to the press statement of CAS the matter has been referred to the honourable Dr.Annabelle Bennett, AC, SC ( AUS) sitting as a sole Arbitrator, who will hold a hearing with the parties today. The statement concluded saying that the sole Arbitrators decision will be delivered before the conclusion of the summer Olympics, Paris. Currently the case is under process being heard with UWW
