Uttarakhand becomes the first state to implement UCC. Sent to governor for his final assent
The Uttarakhand Assembly has passed the Uniform Civil Code bill tabled by the Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami today. Now, Uttarakhand has become the first state in the country to pass this bill likely to become the model state ensuring the centre to implement it in future. The Bhartiya Janata Party and Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has during the assembly elections of 2022 made a promise to the state electorates that his government would implement the UCC if it comes to power in the state for another term. He had also promised to implement the concrete land act in Uttarakhand. Just after few months of coming to power the Uttarakhand CM has fulfilled his election pledge and honoured his assurance given to the state electorates during the 2022 assembly elections. The Uttarakhand chief minister has in a message written on social media, platform on x in Hindi : I extend my heartiest and gracious thanks from the core of my heart to all for acknowledging good wishes and blessings from them. By the grace and guidance of Almighty, prime minister Narendra Modi and God like people of Uttarakhand today our pledge to implement the Uniform Civil Code has become a reality wrote Uttarakhand CM on X.
. The Uniform Civil Code primarily talks about uniformity in implementation of laws in Uttarakhand for all religions, communities irrespective of differences in pursuance of faiths and religions. If passed which is absolutely confirmed, the new UCC in Uttarakhand will ensure minimum age of 18 years for girls and 21 years for men living in Uttarakhand irrespective of religion. If anyone breaches it , will be liable to face jail terms for 6 months and fine of Rs. 25000. The new bill prohibits buying or renting of properties in Uttarakhand without registration including legally prohibiting Polygamy, bigamy, Halala, iddat and triple talaq. There is a provision of three years in jail or a fine of Rs 50000 if anyone contravenes it. All the marriages to be solemnised after UCC implementation have been made mandatory within sixty days after the marriage is solemnised failing which there will be the fine of Rs 10000. Any marriage if dissolved against the UCC norms there is a provision of imprisonment for three years in jails. The living couples should register themselves within a month of live in relation ship failing which they’ll be penalised says the UCC bill. The UCC also legitimises the birth of a child out of relationship mutually acceptable to both including deserted women by her partner becoming eligible for maintenance legally. The bill has been sent to the governor of Uttarakhand Retired ( Lt. General) Gurmeet Singh for his final consent to become a law formally.
