UCC’s final draft handed over to Uttarakhand CM by preparatory committee led by former justice of Supreme Court Ranjana Desai

The saffron clad Uttarakhand government headed by Pushkar Singh Dhami for the second term in succession, not interested in implementing the much demanded concrete Land Act and Basic pramaan Patra with its base year being 1950 despite thousands of electorates of the state protesting tooth and nail has finally made all arrangements to implement the Uniform Civil Code in view of the round the corner general elections. The most enthusiastic chief minister of Uttarakhand has today received the final draft from the five member UCC committee headed by the retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai likely to be tabled and passed in the Uttarakhand assembly where the BJP is already in majority with 47 MLAs on its side.

The Uniform Civil Code committee took twenty months to prepare and finalise the draft.

The draft was handed over to the chief minister Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami at his official residence by the chairperson of the committee Ranjana Desai, the chief secretary Radha Raturi, the Doon University Vice Chancellor Dr. Surekha Dangwal and other members of the drafting committee.

The final draft of the UCC will be tabled in the cabinet affairs Committee for final approval to be chaired by the chief minister and then send to assembly for ratification.

Thereafter on 6 February it will be tabled in the Uttarakhand assembly for ratification and then send to Governor for final approval.

Kindly recall that the BJP had in 2022 state election had pledged in various public meetings for the implementation of UCC finally dittoed by various central ministers including the home minister Amit Shah who had campaigned extensively in Uttarakhand in 2022 assembly elections.

There are reports that the saffron party would try to seek maximum political mileage during the general elections terming it as the basis for the making of the national UCC by the Central government in future.

What is interesting to note here is that there had been tremendous protests in the entire state demanding concrete land act and basic Pramaan Patra 1950 but the government has shown keen interest in implementing the UCC rather than showing interest in the Concrete land act, the demand raised by Uttarakhand electorates since long.
