Trade Union leaders used to invite Rajesh Khanna to their lunch hour meetings to collect crowds and get their demands fulfilled using his political clout

When Kaka was contesting from New Delhi in 1992 against BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani and thereafter against Shatrughan Sinha – he was also invited by several trade union leaders to their lunch hour meetings to use his clout as a Congress candidate as well as a popular superstar to collect crowds as Kaka was undoubtedly a great crowd puller.

Where ever Kaka went during his campaign meetings in colonies, J. J. clusters or office precincts during day and evening hours there was no dearth of curious crowds and onlookers with hundreds of his fans following him in large numbers which included youths, students, women of all ages and even senior citizens.

During his campaign he also visited Gurudwaras, temples and mosques and was recieved with immense enthusiasm and reverence.

Though he was a Congress candidate, hailing from the party that ruled the centre but Kaka enticed electorates of all political parties because they were supporting not a Congress candidate but a popular versatile superstar who ruled the silver screen for five decades giving 15 super duper hit movies from 1969 to 1972 and maintained his stardom for several decades having worked in more than 190 movies.

I fondy remember , Rajesh Negi, a dynamic union leader of DDA Workers Union had invited Rajesh Khanna at two lunch hour meetings in support of their demands, one at INA DDA Sadan and another at Y Shape CPWD building at I TO in which thousands of enthusiastic crowd of government employees of DDA and adjoining buildings participated.

These public meetings of trade unions during Lunch hour helped Kaka a lot to earn the support of the government employees, majority of whom were the voters of New Delhi parliamentary constituency including satisfying the urge of trade union leaders.

Another lunch our meeting was convened by the NDMC workers Union outside the NDMC building near Jantar Jantar which too was a great success.

Kaka used his clout to resolve most of the trade union issues using his influence and high connections.

Very few people know that when Kaka was contesting he was approached by several trade unions and government employees associations to use his clout and meet the then finance minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to impress upon him to increase the income tax exemption limit from 60000 annually to a lakh.

Kaka arranged a meeting and met Dr. Singh with the proposal with the finance minister agreeing to the genuine proposal thuss enhancing the income tax exemption limit to 1 lakh annually winning the hearts of government employees.The photo below is of NDMC meeting.

जब काका 1992 में नई दिल्ली से भाजपा के दिग्गज नेता लाल कृष्ण आडवाणी के खिलाफ और उसके बाद शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा के खिलाफ चुनाव लड़ रहे थे – तो उन्हें कांग्रेस के उम्मीदवार के साथ-साथ एक लोकप्रिय सुपरस्टार के रूप में अपने प्रभाव का उपयोग करने के लिए भीड़ इकट्ठा करने के लिए कई ट्रेड यूनियन नेताओं द्वारा दोपहर के भोजन के समय की बैठकों में भी बुलाया गया था क्योंकि काका निस्संदेह एक महान भीड़ खींचने वाले व्यक्ति थे। दिन और शाम के समय काका अपने अभियान की बैठकों के दौरान कॉलोनियों, जे.जे. क्लस्टरों या कार्यालय परिसरों में जहां भी जाते थे, वहां उत्सुक भीड़ और दर्शकों की कोई कमी नहीं होती थी और उनके सैकड़ों प्रशंसक बड़ी संख्या में उनके पीछे होते थे, जिनमें युवा, छात्र, सभी उम्र की महिलाएं और यहां तक ​​कि वरिष्ठ नागरिक भी शामिल थे। अपने अभियान के दौरान उन्होंने गुरुद्वारों, मंदिरों और मस्जिदों का भी दौरा किया और उनका अत्यधिक उत्साह और श्रद्धा के साथ स्वागत किया गया। हालाँकि वे केंद्र में शासन करने वाली पार्टी से कांग्रेस के उम्मीदवार थे, लेकिन काका ने सभी राजनीतिक दलों के मतदाताओं को लुभाया क्योंकि वे कांग्रेस के उम्मीदवार का नहीं बल्कि एक लोकप्रिय बहुमुखी सुपरस्टार का समर्थन कर रहे थे, जिन्होंने 1969 से 1972 तक 15 सुपर डुपर हिट फिल्में देकर पांच दशकों तक सिल्वर स्क्रीन पर राज किया और 190 से अधिक फिल्मों में काम करके कई दशकों तक अपना स्टारडम बनाए रखा। मुझे अच्छे से याद है, डीडीए वर्कर्स यूनियन के गतिशील यूनियन नेता राजेश Negi ने अपनी मांगों के समर्थन में दोपहर के भोजन के समय दो बैठकों में राजेश खन्ना को आमंत्रित किया था, एक आईएनए डीडीए सदन में और दूसरी आई टीओ में वाई शेप सीपीडब्ल्यूडी बिल्डिंग में, जिसमें डीडीए और आसपास की इमारतों के सरकारी कर्मचारियों की हजारों उत्साही भीड़ ने भाग लिया था। दोपहर के भोजन के समय ट्रेड यूनियनों की इन सार्वजनिक बैठकों से काका को सरकारी कर्मचारियों का समर्थन अर्जित करने में बहुत मदद मिली, जिनमें से अधिकांश नई दिल्ली संसदीय क्षेत्र के मतदाता थे। एक और दोपहर के भोजन के लिए हमारी बैठक एनडीएमसी वर्कर्स यूनियन द्वारा जंतर जंतर के पास एनडीएमसी भवन के बाहर बुलाई गई थी जो कि एक बड़ी सफलता थी। काका ने अपने प्रभाव और उच्च संबंधों का उपयोग करके ट्रेड यूनियन के अधिकांश मुद्दों को हल करने में अपनी ताकत का इस्तेमाल किया। बहुत कम लोग जानते हैं कि जब काका चुनाव लड़ रहे थे तो कई ट्रेड यूनियनों और सरकारी कर्मचारी संघों ने उनसे संपर्क किया था कि वे अपने प्रभाव का इस्तेमाल करें और तत्कालीन वित्त मंत्री डॉ. मनमोहन सिंह से मिलकर उन पर आयकर छूट की सीमा 60000 सालाना से बढ़ाकर एक लाख करने के लिए दबाव डालें। काका ने एक बैठक आयोजित की और प्रस्ताव के साथ डॉ. सिंह से मुलाकात की, वित्त मंत्री ने वास्तविक प्रस्ताव पर सहमति व्यक्त की और इस प्रकार सरकारी कर्मचारियों का दिल जीतकर आयकर छूट सीमा को सालाना 1 लाख तक बढ़ा दिया। नीचे दी गई तस्वीर एनडीएमसी बैठक की है।
