Today is the 97 th Birth anniversary of legendary globally renowned environmentalist, recipient of prestigious Padma Shree, Padma Vibhushan, Megsasay and several other national and international recognitions for his unparalleled contribution to deforestation, environment and ecological conservation, promoting renowned Chipko movement globally and penning down hundreds of articles in leading national and global dailies and periodicals to create and spread awareness among the global population. I was fortunate enough to interview him thrice and meet him at his Dehradun residence. An institution in himself Sunderlal Bahuguna is not only a globally acclaimed environmentalist but was a Gandhian environmentalist all his life having fought against the then Tehri dynasty participating in several anti Tehri dynastic rule and anti colonial repressive rule demonstrations in Tehri Garhwal and other parts of the country during the freedom movement with great freedom fighters and revolutionaries Narendra Saklani and Sridev Suman etc. Sunder Lal Bahuguna’s tremendous writings on Chipko movement, environment cinservation, his leadership with the founder of Chipko Gaura Devi and Chandigarh Prasad Bhatt had added multifaceted dimensions to the Chipko movement in 1974 that finally led to the then government implementing the forest conservation act and forbidding the massive cutting of trees in Uttarakhand hills. A fighter against Tehri Dam too Sunder Lal Bahuguna sat on a 45 days hunger strike finally compelling the then PM PV Narsimha Rao to form a review environmental committee to on the ecological impacts of the Tehri Dam. My salutes to this great Gandhian and a globally recognised environmentalist on his birth anniversary.
विश्व स्तर पर प्रसिद्ध पर्यावरणविद, वनों की कटाई, पर्यावरण और पारिस्थितिक संरक्षण में उनके अद्वितीय योगदान, विश्व स्तर पर प्रसिद्ध चिपको आंदोलन को बढ़ावा देने और कलम चलाने के लिए प्रतिष्ठित पद्म श्री, पद्म विभूषण, मेगासे और कई अन्य राष्ट्रीय और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय सम्मान प्राप्तकर्ता की आज 97वीं जयंती है। वैश्विक आबादी के बीच जागरूकता पैदा करने और फैलाने के लिए प्रमुख राष्ट्रीय और वैश्विक दैनिक समाचार पत्रों और पत्रिकाओं में सैकड़ों लेख। मुझे उनका तीन बार साक्षात्कार करने और उनके देहरादून स्थित आवास पर मिलने का सौभाग्य मिला। सुंदरलाल बहुगुणा अपने आप में एक संस्था हैं, जो न केवल विश्व स्तर पर प्रशंसित पर्यावरणविद् हैं, बल्कि एक गांधीवादी पर्यावरणविद् भी थे, जिन्होंने अपने पूरे जीवन में तत्कालीन टिहरी राजवंश के खिलाफ लड़ते हुए, टिहरी गढ़वाल और देश के अन्य हिस्सों में कई टिहरी राजवंश विरोधी और औपनिवेशिक दमनकारी शासन विरोधी प्रदर्शनों में भाग लिया था। स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन के दौरान महान स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों और क्रांतिकारियों नरेंद्र सकलानी और श्रीदेव सुमन आदि के साथ चिपको आंदोलन, पर्यावरण संरक्षण पर सुंदर लाल बहुगुणा के जबरदस्त लेखन, चिपको के संस्थापक गौरा देवी और चंडीगढ़ प्रसाद भट्ट के साथ उनके नेतृत्व ने चिपको आंदोलन में बहुमुखी आयाम जोड़े थे। 1974 में आखिरकार तत्कालीन सरकार ने वन संरक्षण अधिनियम लागू किया और उत्तराखंड की पहाड़ियों में बड़े पैमाने पर पेड़ों की कटाई पर रोक लगा दी। टेहरी बांध के खिलाफ भी एक सेनानी सुंदर लाल बहुगुणा 45 दिनों की भूख हड़ताल पर बैठे, जिसके बाद आखिरकार तत्कालीन प्रधान मंत्री पीवी नरसिम्हा राव को टेहरी बांध के पारिस्थितिक प्रभावों पर एक समीक्षा पर्यावरण समिति बनाने के लिए मजबूर होना पड़ा। इस महान गांधीवादी और विश्व स्तर पर मान्यता प्राप्त पर्यावरणविद् को उनकी जयंती पर मेरा सलाम।
