Three thousand people affected by increasing subsidence in several villages, highways and towns of Uttarkashi
Hundreds of inhabitants living in CHINYALISAUD area adjacent to TEHRI LAKE are confronting imminent danger to their lives due to subsidence adversely affecting a sizeable population of over three thousand people.
The monsoon’s heavy rain and subsequent ecological disasters have added to their vows and the increasing subsidence have created cracks in houses situated at Pipalmandi to Naagni, in Tehri Garhwal.
Kindly recall that the massive subsidence in the holy town Joshimath in Garhwal, the gateway to historic shrines developing cracks in over thousand houses leading to the displacement of one thousand families is already in news and several other villages of Karnprayag, Badrinath Dham areas etc have also reported such cracks in several houses posing direct threat to people’s existence.
According to a detailed report published in ” Jagran” Garhwal edition despite the in depth assessment of the affected areas the administration has not exercised any preventive steps despite the hard fact that from DEVISAUD AREA under Uttarkashi to HADIYAADI – the subsidence has enhanced up to 1.5 kilometre distance with news of subsidence in a 60 metre area over Gangotri Highway from LISA DEPOT TO NAAGNI having been also reported.
This subsidence has stretched from Tehri lake managed by THDC to CHINYALISAUD area in Uttarkashi.
According to the news report the Border Roads Organisation manning highway roads have written a letter to THDC to construct a supportive concrete wall around the Tehri Lake in view of the subsidence in 60 metre areas in the highway. Apart from the subsidence on the highway the BRO has also witnessed 600 metre subsequent cracks stopping the movement of traffic etc for protracted period subject to the affected area’s assessment by geologists and subsequent repair works etc.
During monsoon’s heavy rain the water level of the Lake has increased manifold resulting in the subsidence in Uttarkashi adversely affecting the CHINYALISAUD, BIJALWAAN MOHALLA, MALEEN BASTI, PWD COLONY, hospital and house on Jonathan road developing cracks.
In addition the areas between Arch Bridge and Pipalmandi Mandi has also faced subsidence posing direct threat to lives of the residents.
A primary school at Devisauda has also acknowledged subsidence including 1.5 kilometre road to Hadiyadi from Devisauda.
Meanwhile there are reports of THDC team doing the inspection of the entire affected areas and have taken samples for examination and rectification of the critical situation.
Meanwhile the founder of Dehradun based SDC and environment expert Anoop Nautiyal has in a tweet in Hindi wrote : Indefinite number of villages and towns in Uttarakhand are sinking, making everyone worrisome. In view of the ground report of Dainik Jagran the government of Uttarakhand should initiate immediate action forthwith to set right the critical situation after deeply analysing and assessing the subsidence in Uttarakhand and affected Tehri and Uttarkashi areas.
