The Election Commission of India has already commenced the due process for the election of the new Vice President of India who also automatically becomes the Vice chairman of Rajya Sabha. This process has started today after the resignation of the outgoing Vice president and chairman of Rajya Sabha was accepted by the president of India Draupadi Murmu. The then Vice President Jagdeep Shankar had this morning personally met the president and handed over the resignation letter to her citing the advice of the doctors and his health condition, being under treatment. His letter addressed to the president started with a small paragraph stating that to prioritise health care and abide by the medical advice I hereby resign as the Vice President of India immediately in accordance with Article 67 ( a) of the Constitution. Meanwhile, the election commission has from today started the process of the election of the new president. As per the Election Commission’s press note issued today the Ministry of Home Affairs vide its Gazette Notification S.O.3354 ( E) dated 22 July, 2025 has notified the resignation of Shri Jagdeep Shankar, Vice President of India. Now, the outgoing Vice President Jagdeep Shankar will have to immediately vacate his official bungalow to make way for the new Vice President to whom the official VP house will be allotted. The EC press release says that preparation of electoral college which consists of elected and nominated members of Rajya Sabha as well as Lok Sabha is underway including finalisation of returning and assistant returning officers and preparation and dissemination of all the background material on all the previous Vice Presidential elections.
