The 77 years old former Congress president and chairman of the Congress parliamentary party Sonia Gandhi will be campaigning for her daughter and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi who is the official Congress candidate from Wayanad parliamentary constituency where the by poll is being held after her brother and now leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi had resigned inorder to retain the Rae Bareilly seat from where he had won in the 2025 general elections.
The Rae Bareilly seat fell vacant because not keeping good health Sonia Gandhi had to voluntarily resign from here and she was brought to upper house in parliament from Rajasthan.
Wayanad was a make shift arrangement seat for Rahul Gandhi when he had contested from Wayanad and Amethi retaining the Wayanad seat in 2019 general elections when he lost from Amethi at the hands of BJP candidate Smriti Irani, union minister then , though in 2024 she had lost with a big margin at the hands of the Rahul Gandhi family loyalist ( candidate) who had nursed Rae Bareilly and Amethi for several years namely Kishore Lal from Punjab. In order not to annoy the Wayanad electorates in Kerala, Gandhi family asked Priyanka to contest and she agreed. The election to this by poll are due for 13 th November and counting on 23 rd November. Priyanka Gandhi is to win from this seat positively as it is a stronghold of Congress and the minorities are in majority in this constituency.
