Sangeeta Barooah senior journalist becomes the first ever woman as president of Press Club of India with her entire panel winning hands down

The entire panel of Press Club of India led by the president Sangeeta Barooah Pishroty and secretary general Afzal Iman has won hands down. This was the only panel contesting against the splintered group of independent candidates having lost their fixed deposits.

As during the previous elections this time too the winning panel candidates have secured 80 to 90% votes.

According to the final results announced by the chief election officer of PCI MMC Sharma, on president’s post – senior journalist from “The Wire” Sangeeta Barooah Pishroty has secured 1019 votes against merely 89 votes secured by Arun Sharma and 120 votes bagged by Atul Mishra, losing their security deposits.

Similarly on the post of Vice President Jatin Gandhi won securing handsome number of votes viz 1029 against his rivals securing negligible 107 and 58 votes.

Afzal Iman of this panel secured 948 votes and won hands down.

On the posts of JOINT SECRETARY AND TREASURER P.R. SUNIL KUMAR and Aditi Rajput have won unopposed already.

On all the sixteen posts of managing committee the election was one sided as on merely six posts ( MC) the rival candidates have contested losing badly.

It is noteworthy to mention here that in the history of PCI Sangeeta Barooah Pishroty is the first woman journalist won as President and with a landslide victory.

In the elections for the 16-member Managing Committee, Niraj Kumar topped the list with 932
votes, followed by Abhishek Kumar Singh (911), Jahanvi Sen (903), Ashok Kaushik (892), Kallol
Bhattacharjee (882), Praveen Jain (878), Agraj Pratap Singh (865), Manoj Sharma (861), Nyanima
Basu (851), PB Suresh (838), VP Pandey (833), Prem Bahukhandi (831), Sneha Bhura (829), Javed Akhtar (823), Rezaul Hasan Laskar (781), and Sunil Kumar (780).

“The election reflects the collective confidence of the Press Club of India members in our panel’s vision and long-standing commitment to upholding the values of free, fair, and responsible
journalism,” Pisharoty said after the announcement of the result.

The outgoing President, Gautam Lahiri expressed gratitude to the members of the Press Club of India for their trust and support.

He asserted that the new team will continue to make the Club more inclusive, responsive, and relevant to the evolving challenges faced by journalists today in India.

“The Press Club of India has, since its inception, served as a vital institution for journalists from across the country and abroad.

The election of its first woman President stands as a powerful symbol of progress and a reaffirmation of the Club’s dedication to equality, diversity, and democratic values,” the outgoing secretary-general of the PCI, Neeraj Thakur said.
