The Rajinder Nagar tragedy in which three civil services aspirants have succumbed to the ferocious rainwater overfilling inside the basement in Rau’s Study Circle where about thirty aspirants were sitting in the illegal library when the high tide rainwater due to heavy rain broke the glass door and entered the basement leading to three tragic deaths and rest of the students coming out in desperation, has gained tremendous momentum and the Delhi police has already arrested the owner of the institute and its manager sent to 14 days judicial custody.
This tragic incident that claimed three young lives due to the negligence of the owner of the Rau Study Circle who was running the library illegally in the basement has finally compelled the MCD to come into action which closed thirteen such illegal basements in various such private institutes in Delhi who were operating without the proper licencing n permission of the civic authority.
The tragedy send shock waves all over Delhi and at the pan India level as well with the issue being discussed in Parliament’s both the houses, the Delhi Municipal Corporation and on the ground with outrageous students and youths on the protesting mode not ready to relent.
The Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and Vice President of India jagdeep Dhankad too expressed his serious concern and anguish over these tragic young deaths saying that coaching has become virtually commercial to mint excessive profits.
Whenever we read newspapers, the front and second pages are full of advertisements of these commercial private institutes. Expressing his serious concern the Rajyasabha Chairman said that it seems appropriate to have a short duration discussion or calling attention in the RajyaSabha and will also hold a meeting with the leaders of all political parties in his chamber on this pivotal issue said the Vice president Jagdeep Dhankar. Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi while expressing his anguish over this tragedy said the death of competitive students due to waterlogging in the basement of a building in Delhi is very unfortunate. A few days ago, a student died due to electric shock during the rains. I express my heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families. This collapse of infrastructure is a collective failure of the system. The common citizen is paying the price of unsafe construction, poor town planning and irresponsibility of institutions at every level by losing his life. Safe and comfortable life is the right of every citizen and the responsibility of the governments wrote Rahul on his social media handle X.
The union minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan initiated the discussion on the Rajinder Nagar tragedy in Rajya Sabha saying that it has occured due to the negligence. He said that unless accountability is fixed as to who is cumulatively responsible for this tragedy there won’t be solution to it. The minister said that such private coaching centres should be monitored regularly and ensured that they function under the strict regulations. Taking lessons from this tragedy we should ensure that such tragedies do not recur in the near future said union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The Delhi Lt governor V.K.Saxena visited the tragedy site at Rau Study Circle and met the protesting students assuring them of stringent legal action against those responsible for this tragedy.
Meanwhile the BJP councillors protested in MCD holding postcards and raising anti Delhi government slogans, even climbing on the tables. Due to pandemonium and excessive noise the house was adjourned.
The vociferous Rajya Sabha MP, formerly the chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women Swati Maliwal raised the issue in RajyaSabha demanding Rs. One crore as monetary compensation to the bereaved families of the three deceased aspirants at the basement of Rau’s Study Circle.
