The former Congress president and the main inspiring force behind the party Wayanad and Rae Bareilly member of parliament Rahul Gandhi would be resigning from the Wayanad Kerala to retain his newly elected Rae Bareilly seat being held earlier by the former prime minister and his grandmother Indira Gandhi and mother Sonia Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi had lost from Amethi , the family and Congress stronghold in 2019 by nearly fifty five thousand votes while contesting against the most vociferous BJP minister then, Smriti Irani. However, just after one term she had lost at the hands of his personal assistant Kishori Lal Sharma who was looking after the constituency affairs of both Rae Bareilly as well as Amethi. After being defeated from Amethi Rahul Gandhi who had sensed his possible defeat then due to the saffron party undercurrent, had won from Wayanad , Kerala in 2019 n retained it. In 2019 Rahul had won from Wayanad by a margin of more than 4 lakh 80 thousand votes and in 2024 by a huge margin of over more than 3.5 lakh votes. From Amethi Rahul had defeated the BJP rival by 3.5 lakh votes making a record of sorts. However, after giving a serious thought and Rae Bareilly being the traditional political constituency since several decades and stronghold of his family n Congress coming in Uttar Pradesh, the biggest state, commanding the politics of the nation, Rahul Gandhi had no choice but to prefer Rae Bareilly than Wayanad, Kerala which always stood for the Congress leader in distress with immense dedication and ideological commitment. The Kerala State Congress president K.Sudhakaran addressing a public meeting has hinted that Rahul Gandhi will resign from Wayanad saying that we should not be saddened as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who is supposed to rise in national politics cannot be expected to be in Wayanad. We shouldn’t lose our hearts but rather wish him and support him outrightly said K. Sudhakaran. Meanwhile, Congress leader and MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi in a public address thanked the Wayanad electorates from the core of his heart saying that he is indebted for the massive support extended to him by them. This was Rahul Gandhi’s first visit to Wayanad, Kerala after his historic victory by a margin of 3,64, 422 votes defeating his nearest CPI rival, the wife of national CP In general secretary D. RAJA namely Annie Raja. In the year 2019 Rahul had won by a historic margin of 4.3 lakh votes. It may be recalled that after being elected as the leader of opposition and Congress almost doubling its numerical strength in Lok Sabha from 52 to more than a hundred and NDA increasing its talky to 232 seats, firebrand Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s role in parliament has become more significant. The first session of Lok Sabha therefore seems to be extremely hectic with the treasury benches not in that comfortable position as they used to be earlier. They will have to answer several questions pertaining to ED, CBI, IT’s vindictive role to harrass the opposition leaders especially the Nehru Gandhi family including freezing their accounts during elections leading to the party becoming financially handicapped . The issue if the leaders being sent to jails including the matter of electoral bonds will also come up in the lok sabha debates with opposition grilling the treasury benches.
