President and PM congratulate first Gold medalist of CW Games Mira Chanu and two other Silver n Bronze winners in weight lifting

The President Draupadi Murmu and Prime minister Narendra Modi heartily congratulated Saikom Mira Bhai Chanu, an outstanding weight lifter of India for bagging the first Gold medal in the Birmingham Common Wealth Games bringing laurels for the nation in the 109 kilogram first attempt in the clean and jerk round, earlier taking 12 kg massive lead over her rival by lifting 88 kg in the snatch round. The president Draupadi Murmu while heartily congratulating Mira Bai Chanu for her outstanding feat of bringing the first gold medal for the country tweeted : Meerabai scripts history by winning weightlifting gold medal, setting a new record in # CommonwealthGames. Her first gold medal for India in the ongoing games has created a wave of joy and celebration across the country. Well done, Mirabai! India is proud of you and your medals tweeted President Murmu. She also congratulated P Gururaja for winning the bronze medal in Weightlifting at CW games adding that he has made India, proud once again at Commonwealth Games. She said my best wishes for many more such inspiring feats.

Prime minister Narendra Modi through his tweet too congratulated Saikom Mirabai Chanu saying that her successful achievement will inspire several Indians, especially budding athletes of the country. He tweeted : The exceptional Mira Bai Chanu makes India proud once again! Every Indian is delighted that she has won a Gold medal and set a new Commonwealth record at the Birmingham games. Mirabai Chanu, who had earlier won two gold medals in 2018 in two attempts defending her title is 27 years old who had clinched first Gold for the country after completing her 109 kg first attempt in the clean and jerk round having earlier taken a massive lead of 22 kg against her immediate rival by 88 kg in the snatch round. Her immediate rival of Mauritius namely Marie Hanitra Ranaivosova won the Silver medal coming second. It may be recalled that India opened its medal tally on Saturday in the Birmingham Common Wealth Games 2022 when 21 year old weight lifter Sanket Mahadev Sagar won Silver in the 55 kg catagory. He tried his best to win the Gold but luck didn’t favoured him failing in clean and jerk attempts despite his best performance, finishing second for a combined lift of (113 + 135 kgs) – 248 khs to finish the record. Similarly Gururaj Poojari, (56kg catagory) silver medal winner had to contend with bronze in men’s 61 kg weight lifting. Congratulations to them all especially Saikom Mirabai Chanu, who raised the India flag high bagging the first Gold medal in weightlifting in Birmingham Common Wealth Games, 2022.
