Pandit Mahavir Sharma who rescued several UK movement activists on 2 nd Oct 94 and donated land for Shaheed Smarak is no more. Uttarakhand is indebted to him
Seventy four year old Mahavir Sharma of Muzaffar Nagar who donated his land for the construction of “Martyr Smarak”, ( Shaheed Smarak”, ) at Ram Pur Tri junction in Mujaffar Nagar, UP and rescued several movement activists on the dreaded night when the then cruel UP police unabatedly lathi charged n thrashed Uttarakhand movement activists , firing on them and raping innocent women activists in the agricultural fields killing several of them who were going to participate in the Uttarakhand rally being held at Red Fort grounds on 2nd October 1992, the birth anniversary of the father of the nation, a preacher of non violence, is no more. He died on 27 th July after prolonged illness. Had Pandit Mahavir Sharma not given shelter and safety to the movement activists on the dreadful night of 2nd October in his village there would have been enormous tragedies reveal sources. He was in fact a “Gumnaam Sipahi “, of Uttarakhand movement who not only saved several lives on the night of 2 nd October, 1994 when UP police and anti social elements went berserk killing innocent Uttarakhand movement activists at Mujaffar nagar Rampur Trijunction but also donated land for the construction of Shaheed Smarak at Rampur Tiraha as tributes to the Uttarakhand movement martyrs. Though the successive Uttarakhand governments could not remember this great Gumnaam sipahi of Uttarakhand movement, the then chief minister of Uttarakhand while in Congress in 2023-14 did thanked Mahavir Sharma and his village inhabitants for protecting the Uttarakhand movement activists and women folks by giving them shelter on the ill fated night of 2nd October, 1994 but thereafter also giving land for the construction of Shaheed Smarak at the trijunction of tragedies. Vijay Bahuguna had personally visited this village of muzaffarpur Nagar and expressed his gracious thanks to the villagers in general and Mahavir Sharma in particular. Kindly recall that RamPur Tiraha on the dreaded night of 2nd October, 1994 was an open ground for gang rapes, brutal killings and thrashing by UP cops, anti social elements having been given green signals by the senior officers to curb them high handedly come what may thus discouraging them to reach Delhi to participate in the Uttarakhand rally. Seven people had died on this horrifying night of blood bath and several grievously injured, including missing with women gang rapes in the agricultural sugarcane fields. Such horrendous act had never been witnessed earlier. Had Mahavir Sharma and his villagers not given protection and safe shelter to the badly threatened and injured movement activists that day, there would have been more tragedy reveal people who were witnessed to this gory incident. Mahavir Sharma and several villagers had truly helped injured n terrified women n men including youths and children with blood stains on their clothes n injuries with fresh clothes, food, medical aid n everything. Several muslim families of this village toi came to their rescue. Salutes to Mahavir Sharma n the villagers of Ram Pur Tiraha for their timely help and assistance saving several lives and thereafter donating a land fir the construction of Shaheed Smarak. According to journalist Jhaknola a documentary documentary maker Jaideep Bhattacharya and Uttarakhand movement activist Jaideep Saklani had produced a documentary on Mahavir Sharma and the village folks to acquaint us of what transpired on the night of 2nd October, 1994 and the way movement activists were helped rescued.
The story reveals that Uttarakhandies are indebt to the late Pt. Mahabir sharma of Muzaffarnagar and are grateful. To recognize his kind help Uttarakhand Govt. Should atleast declare an award in his name or a city or town may be named after him.
