Newly emerged regional party ZPM secures absolute majority in Mizoram with MNF confiding with 10 seats, BJP with 2 and Congress distant 4 with merely one seat.
After being badly trounced at the hands of the saffron party in three Hindi heartland states Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the Congress party has fared extremely bad in Mizoram too where out of total 40 seats it could win merely a single seat. Mizoram was ruled by the Congress CM Lal Taanhwala for five terms since 1984. According to the current results the regional political party Zoram People’s Movement led by Mr. Lalduhoma secured a single largest majority bagging 27 seats fully eligible to form the government in the 40 member assembly. The caretaker chief minister Mr. C. M. Zoramthanga has tendered his resignation to the state governor Mr. Hari Babu Kambhampati bowing to the people’s verdict. According to the final tally while ZPM has bagged 27 seats, the Mizo National Front which was ruling Mizoram got ten seats with Bhartiya Janata Party bagging two seats and Congress merely one. Since Mizoram attained the full fledged statehood in 1987 the Congress party and Mizo National Front ruled the state . This will be the very first time that a newly emerged regional party ZPM has secured such a comfortable majority and would be forming its government without any party’s support. After the state attained full statehood the Congress party ruled till 1998 . In 1998 the Mizo National Front won the state election with Zoramthanga of MNF becoming CM in 1998 and continuing till 2008 . The Congress won the election again in 2008 and 2013 ruling till 2018. The Mizo National Front came to power in 2018 but after five years of rule if list this time at the hands of the newly emerged regional party Zoram People’s Movement securing 27 seats to form its government.
