Himalayan state’s weight lifter Mira Bai Chanu bags the 1st Silver in Tokyo Olympics

There is a great news for countrymen to rejoice and feel proud. Manipur’s outstanding sportswoman Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has raised the India’s flag high in Tokyo Olympics by bagging a first silver medal in weightlifting for India in Tokyo Olympics.

This outstanding triumph of hers is after 21 years of protracted wait in 49 kg category, for India in Olympics.

21 years old Mira Bai Chanu of Manipur has won this prestigious silver medal in 49 kg catagory bringing first medal in the Tokyo Olympics bringing all round applause in the country with 26 year old K. Maheshwari, prominent weightlifter accompanying bronze for the nation in Sidney Olympics in the year 2000.

Mirabai who came in second position with China’s Hou Zihui winning the Gold, lifted in total 202 Kg ( 87 kilograms in snatch and 115 Kgs in clean n jerk) while China’s Zihui lifted 2010 kg making a world record.

While Saikhom Mira Bai’s silver medal victory is the reason to rejoice and feel proud, on the Air pistol shooting front, the news is not to rejoice as India’s Saurav Choudhary could not succeed, having failed to win any medal.

19 years old Saurav came in 7 th position in 10 metres Air Pistol shooting match, not able to end an event with the podium finish.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has congratulated Mirabai Chanu for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Could not have asked for a happier start to @Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian. #Cheer4India #Tokyo2020”

According to the latest Olympic medal tally China is on the top winning two golds and one bronze, followed by Equador, Iran and South Korea winning one gold each. India, Netherlands, ROC n Serbia have won silver medals each whereas Indonesia, Mexico, Slovenia and Switzerland have secured bronze medals.
