Mamata Banerjee meets Sonia, Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi. Her efforts to unite opposition takes an important turn

In her bid to forge a credible anti BJP opposition unity, though the national elections are still three years ahead, firebrand chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Bannerjee who is on a five day Delhi visit, with a day already passed, has today met the Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi at ten Janpath and later in Delhi CM and national convenor of AAP Arvind Kejriwal at her nephew Abhishek Banerjee’s house.

The West Bengal CM was warm heartedly received by all the three leaders, her being this very first visit to Delhi after winning the state elections for the third time consecutively. The West Bengal CM had yesterday met the prime minister Narendra Modi at his 7 Lok Kalyan Marg demanding vaccine supply in adequate numbers to her state and a high level Supreme Court led probe in the ongoing Pegasus imbroglio. She had also met senior Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Anand Sharma terming the meeting with them as courtesy calls to congratulate her on her victory, though the fact remains that in politics the meetings of leaders are never courtesy calls, but hold tremendous meanings.

A, firebrand leader who defeated BJP at the hustings despite the prime minister, home minister n the saffron party chief doing their best to defeat her in West Bengal having failed, Mamta Bannerjee categorically revealed that the Congress president Sonia Gandhi heartily desires the unity of opposition parties and has full respect n consideration for the regional parties.

She said we have seen lot of ache din, now we are for Sachche Din said Mamata Bannerjee while speaking to ANI.

Pure Desh mein Khela hoga in the national elections and the competition would be between Modi and the deteriorating country situation with United opposition teaching it a strong lesson for the ruling party’s misdeeds she added.

On a question as to who would be the United oppositions face as it’s leader she said she is an ordinary worker. I am not an astrologer to predict, it depends on the situation. I want to continue my efforts as a worker. We will a sit together and work out something concrete she added. A common platform is necessary to work out the unity said Mamta Bannerjee. An exasperated Mamata Bannerjee had yesterday while responding to media’s questions complained that even my phone and my nephew’s are being allegedly tapped by ” pegasus”. She had demanded the supreme Court led high level probe while meeting the PM.

Furious against the ruling party as usual she had complained about the negligence of the ongoing government having not up to the mark in dealing with Covid 19 situation with bodies of Covid fatalities allegedly being thrown in Ganges and the image of the government going down.

According to a Republic TV report Mamta Bannejee said : PM Modi was popular in 2019. Today they have not kept a record of dead bodies. Last rites were denied and bodies were thrown into the Ganges. Those who lost their lived ones will not forget and forgive said Mamta while interacting with the media.

Kindly recall that Mamata Bannerjee is determined to forge the opposition unity and meeting Sonia Gandhi n Arvind Kejriwal including two Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Anand Sharma n later on Sharad Pawar are the steps in this direction.

This being the parliament session she will meet leaders of other political parties as well taking full advantage of her four days time said political analysts.

However, there had been unity efforts in the past too but all of them fizzled out. Even in West Bengal when Mamata Bannerjee was single handedly countering the BJP political challenge in the elections, Congress and left parties were also contesting separately criticizing her, in a way giving saffron party sufficient chances to succeed.

However, it couldn’t work and Mamata single handedly won hands down.

Similarly in the past in 2017 UP n earlier Rajasthan n MP elections the opposition forces were scattered with SP n BSP sidelining Congress in UP n similarly Congress sidelining in MP n Rajasthan ultimately granting tremendous space to BJP to win, thus giving full political advantage to BJP in the largest state of the country.
