The BJP high command is giving another opportunity to the incumbent Uttarakhand chief and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt who was the lone BJP politician to file the nomination paper from Uttarakhand at Dehradun proposed by the Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in the presence of several top BJP leaders of the state including the union state minister for road transport and highways and Almora MP Ajay Tamta. Being the lone politician from BJP to file the nomination papers in Uttarakhand for the state president unambiguously means that his name for the second term as Uttarakhand BJP chief is inevitably final.
Several BJP leaders have already given Mahendra Bhatt their advance congratulations who included central state minister Ajay Tamta, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Anil Baluni MP, Mr. Bansal, Rajya Sabha MP, Ajay Bhatt, Trivendra Rawat, Rajya Lakshmi Shah , all MPs n others.
It may be recalled that Mahendra Bhatt was appointed as the Uttrakhand BJP chief being a Brahmin in the year 2022 and this would be his second term in succession, a record in itself.
Mahendra Bhatt is known for his controversial statements in the past standing in full support of the then finance minister Prem Aggrawal when he used an unparliamentary language against the Pahadi community in the assembly , finally compelled to resign.
Not only this but Mahendra Bhatt, UK BJP chief had again given a controversial statement calling the movement activists of Uttarakhand, then protesting at Gairsain as “TATPUNJIA NETAS” inviting tremendous criticism and outrage from the people of the state.
His appointment clearly means that Mahendra Bhatt’s bad mouthing has not impacted the senior leaders of BJP in Delhi and the state and is being rather rewarded.
His son’s name was also associated with the son of the former finance minister Prem Aggrawal who was building an illegal road up to his big hotel cutting trees against the forest act. An FIR was also lodged in this regard.
It may be recalled that the political career of Mahendra Bhatt started in 1991 after his involvement in the Ram janmabhoomi movement. He was in jail for twenty days in Kanskhet and Pauri jail during the movement. He was active in ABVP and JVM and was also active in Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha and held positions as the chief of BJYM.
He won on BJP ticket in 2017 Badrinath Assembly seat and was MLA from 2002 to 2007 from Nandprayag assembly constituency. In 2022 he lost the assembly election. On 30 July 2022 he was appointed state president of BJP and was nominated as Rajya Sabha MP from 2nd April 2024.
The union state minister for Transport a d highways Ajay Tamta tweeted in X : Demonstrating commitment to the rich organizational traditions and democratic ideals of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Honorable Rajya Sabha MP Shri Mahendra Bhatt ji formally filed his nomination for the post of Uttarakhand State President at the BJP State Office in Dehradun today.
