By Amitabh Srivastava

Music indeed has no boundaries.Even as India and China are negotiating their boundary disputes the people of China have taken up the 1982 hit number of ‘Disco Dancer’ to protest against shortage of food in China. ‘Jie Mi’ in Chinese means Give me Rice.
Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy, aaja aaja aaja…” Angry over Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Zero Covid policy that has placed a huge population under dreaded lockdowns in China, millions have turned to Hindi cinema legend Bappi Lahiri’s superhit song “Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja” from 1982 movie “Disco Dancer” to express their anger and frustration. The Bollywood number sung by Parvati Khan is the new protest song in the country. The song is now trending on the social media platform Douyin — the Chinese version of TikTok. “Jimmy, Jimmy” has become “Jie mi, jie mi” in Mandarin, in which it translates into “Give me rice, give me rice”. In their videos, people opposing Xi’s Covid lockdowns are mockingly showing empty vessels to complain how they are deprived of essential food items due to the communist government’s policies.
